When the 2011 CFL season kicked off at the beginning of the summer, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers burst out of the gates possessed. With an emphasis on defense and athleticism, the young roster ran their record to 7-1 before falling back down to earth in Week 10.

Now, as the final week of the season approaches, they have an opportunity to clinch the top spot in the East Division for good.

Though the Blue Bombers might not sit at the top of the CFL futures, with 4/1 odds of winning the Grey Cup they’re close enough. Those odds stand to take a significant jump if the club can hold on for another victory in Week 19.

When Winnipeg clashes with the Calgary Stampeders in Alberta this Saturday, it will serve as an opportunity for the Bombers to guarantee themselves a first-round bye in the postseason. Since they’re currently tied with the Montreal Alouettes at 10-7 (and since the Bombers hold the tie-breaker), their fate lies in their own hands.

The game is of significance to the hometown Stampeders as well. Embroiled in their own West Division tie, the Stamps can climb up the playoff bracket with a victory. A loss, however, coupled with Calgary’s lack of tie-breakers with Edmonton and B.C., means they’ll be stuck in the No. 3 spot.

Can Winnipeg – more affectionately known this season as Swaggerville – take matters into their own hands and procure their first-round bye? That’s preferable to leaving the door open even slightly for the two-time champion Alouettes.
