For the fourth time at Wimbledon and the eighth time overall at a Grand Slam, the Williams sisters will meet in the finals. The Wimbledon odds makers pretty much expected this to happen as one of the Williams sisters has won Wimbledon seven of the last eight years.
For a while, it looked like it might not be meant to be as Serena was pushed to her limits by No. 4 seeded Russian, Elena Dementieva. That came as somewhat of a surprise as most people expected that Dinara Safina, the No. 1 seed, would give Venus the harder time but it turned out to be opposite.
Online betting handicappers woke up this morning to find Serena in a lot of trouble against Dementieva, down a set and essentially a break away from losing. But Serena fought back in the second set and then outlasted Dementieva in the third set, 8-6.
Serena and Venus have played a total of seven times with Serena win five of them but Venus has won two straight times at Wimbledon. One more win will put her name alongside Steffi Graf as the only women’s players to win Wimbledon three straight times. Don’t be surprised if Venus wins that third straight title.
On the men’s side, the dream is over, it’s moving closer and closer to a Roger Federer-Andy Murray final and I’m betting management couldn’t ask for a better storybook ending.
Federer will face off with Tommy Haas, who nearly ended Federer’s run at the French Open. Haas was just a few points away from defeating Federer in the fourth round before Federer stormed all the way back from two sets down and won in five sets. Federer is a huge favorite against Haas and will likely take him more seriously this time.
A lot of sports predictions will have Federer facing Murray in the final but the Great Brit Hope will have to get past American Andy Roddick first.
Roddick, who has been wildly inconsistent for a while has put it together at Wimbledon. He had trouble putting away Lleyton Hewitt, who was pesky but basically gave up in the fourth set. Roddick was forced to play a fifth set, which might make a difference in fatigue when he faces Andy Murray.
Mount Murray will be in full throat as they’ll be hoping for a finals appearance from their man. They should get it as Federer and Murray seems like the likely final.
