Reigning Champion Giants Long Shots on MLB Futures

The San Francisco Giants may be running out of time in their bid for a National League playoff berth, but they stand to rake in a significant payout on the MLB odds board if they can hold on and repeat last year’s heroic run.

According to Bodog’s online sportsbook, the Giants have 100/1 odds of winning the World Series this year, the lowest (or highest, depending on your frame of mind) of any of the remaining MLB clubs still relevant to the postseason conversation.

Though they sit a handful of games back in the NL West, their upcoming three-game set with the first-place Arizona Diamondbacks (starting Friday) may be their last true opportunity to put a dent in the D-Backs’ reign.

A series sweep of division-leading Arizona would not only put the Giants back in the fold for the NL West title, but also – to an extent – the wild card spot.

With both Matt Cain and Tim Lincecum pegged to make starts in the upcoming series in Arizona (along with rookie left-hander Eric Surkamp on Friday), a three-game sweep isn’t out of the question. Now it just comes down to execution, which the club has shown they’re quite capable of.

Can the reigning champion Giants replicate their World Series run of 2010 a second time? They may need similar heroics just to stamp their ticket into the first round.
