The Minnesota Twins weren’t supposed to factor into the World Series odds but after a three-game sweep against the Chicago White Sox, the Twins found themselves in the lead of the American League Central.
The Twins will get a cupcake series against the Kansas City Royals to finish up their season but they have to capitalize.
On Saturday, the Royals, who were among nobodies World Series picks, will send Gil Meche to the mound to face Glen Perkins.
Meche is just 13-11 with a 4.05 ERA but he has been much more reliable after a tumultuous first month of the season.
In April, Meche gave up 24 earned runs in 27.2 innings pitched (7.94 ERA). Since then, Meche has allowed 65 earned runs in 169.5 innings pitched (3.45 ERA).
Meche has been much more reliable on the road than at home this year, posting an ERA of 3.72 on the road and 4.41 at home.
He’ll face Perkins, who is in his worst month of the season statistically.
Heading into September, Perkins was 12-3 with a 3.97 ERA. In September, Perkins is 0-1 with a 9.42 ERA.
He’s made three road starts this month, though, and he’s struggled away from the Metrodome this season. The good news is Saturday’s start will come at home, where he is 7-3 with a 3.97 ERA.
