MLB Matchup Tuesday – Struggling D’Backs take on Giants

by Smokntbone on September 9, 2008

The Arizona Diamondbacks had great World Series odds a little more than two months ago, but now anyone betting on baseball would not touch them with a ten-foot pole. The Diamondbacks will try to get back on track on Tuesday at AT&T Park, when they meet the San Francisco Giants in the second of a three-game set between these National League West rivals.
Arizona Diamondbacks at San Francisco Giants – 10:15 PM ET
Doug Davis (6-8, 4.58) took a no-decision in a 4-3 win at home over St. Louis, allowing three runs on eight hits over six innings, along with three strikeouts and a walk. The 32-year-old righthander is now 2-1 in his last five starts, and the Diamondbacks need him to be at his best since probable Cy Young winner Brandon Webb is suffering from a minor slump. However, Davis was pummeled in his first meeting against the Giants this season as he was tagged for six runs on nine hits over five innings of an 11-3 loss at home.
Barry Zito (9-16, 5.45) won for the third time in four starts as he led the Giants to a 9-2 romp at Colorado, giving up a pair of runs on four hits over eight innings. A pitcher of Zito’s caliber should not be leading the league in walks, as he is, but everything seems to have gone downhill since he moved across the bay from Oakland to San Francisco. To make matters worse, Zito is an awful 3-10 at home, and he is 0-3 in four starts against the Diamondbacks this season with a 7.40 ERA.
The Diamondbacks had taken seven of 11 from the Giants this season ahead of Monday’s opener, including a three-game sweep at the end of July. The Diamondbacks will need a similar performance to keep pace with the Los Angeles Dodgers, who has rolled past the Diamondbacks in the West. Zito and the Giants are as good a place as any to start a streak. Bet on the Arizona Diamondbacks to come away with the win on Tuesday.
