MLB Match-Up Wednesday - Phillies, Mets locked in NL East battle

August 26, 2008

New York Mets at Philadelphia Phillies- Wednesday, August 27 at 7:05 p.m. ET

Philadelphia and New York are sharing an incredibly tight race for the National League East division title. Presently, Mets odds give New York the edge to win the World Series, but Phillies odds don’t trail much further behind.

A big reason baseball odds are backing New York is Johan Santana (12-7). He’s been excellent this season, posting a 2.64 ERA and 1.14 WHIP. As usual, he’s enjoying a second-half surge, guiding the Mets to four straight wins while going 4-0 with a 2.20 ERA and 1.01 WHIP in his last eight starts.

Santana has had some rough luck in run support this season. The Mets offense is among National League leaders in run scoring, but it seems to sputter when he’s on the hill. Considering how well he’s pitching, it hasn’t really mattered lately.

The Phillies will turn to Kyle Kendrick (11-7). The right-hander is having a tough season despite his win totals, yielding a 4.87 ERA and 1.55 WHIP. That effort has resulted in two losses over his last three starts for Philadelphia.

But Kendrick’s career effort against New York is what makes MLB betting so interesting. Though he’s struggled this season, Kendrick has pitched very well against the Mets, notching a 2.16 ERA in two starts.

Over the past few years Philly’s offense has ranked among the league’s best. Overall, it’s been more of the same this season, but the lineup has truly lagged since the All-Star break. If the hitters could maintain a little more consistency, Philadelphia’s World Series futures might be a little better.

The Mets have won seven of their past 10 meetings with Philadelphia. It doesn’t appear that trend will change on Wednesday, as Santana clearly has a big edge over Kendrick. New York should earn a victory.
