MLB Betting – Verlander Looks To Snap Slump Against Reds

by Dirty on June 8, 2012

Triple Crown betting players will be waiting to see if I’ll Have Another can complete the toughest task in horse racing on Saturday at the Belmont Stakes, but another thoroughbred will be in action on the baseball diamond that day as Justin Verlander leads Detroit out in Cincinnati in interleague play. Verlander hasn’t pitched up to his standards as of late, but the Reds could be in trouble.

Tigers Reds Odds – Saturday, 4:10 PM ET

Verlander (5-4, 2.67) took his third loss in a row as the Tigers were beaten 5-1 at home against the Yankees, and this recent skid may have some online sportsbook players wondering what is wrong with the reigning Cy Young winner. Verlander went 6.1 innings, allowing five runs on nine hits with four walks and four strikeouts, and the Yankees took him deep twice, but you also have to remember that two of the runs he gave up were unearned, so his teammates didn’t offer much help. He has now allowed 10 runs in his last three starts and while that isn’t a lot to some, that is a certified slump for Verlander, who has never faced the Reds, but he is 3-2 in six starts on the road in 2012 with a 3.64 ERA.

The Reds will counter with Bronson Arroyo (2-4, 3.91), who dropped his third straight decision in a 5-3 loss in Houston, giving up five runs on eight hits over 6.1 innings with four strikeouts and a walk. It was the fourth time in five starts that Arroyo has allowed four earned runs or more; it should be no surprise that he is 0-3 over this five-start stretch and that the Reds will be the underdogs at the best online betting sites. The 35-year-old righthander is 2-1 in five starts against the Tigers with a 4.65 ERA, and he is also 1-0 in five home starts, posting a 4.03 ERA.

Sport betting odds should favor the Tigers, who have won six of their last 10 meetings with the Reds, but the two haven’t played since 2006, which was Verlander’s first full season in the majors and besides, they didn’t face him in that series. This means that they are depending on film and that has to be a major edge for Verlander, who hasn’t pitched badly over this three-game stint, but he just hasn’t been what we’re used to seeing. The Reds could get the brunt of it because stepping into the box against Verlander has to be far more different than anything you’ll see on film. Meanwhile, Arroyo is up and down and while he can have great games, he has never been close to Verlander’s level. Take the Tigers on the road in your online sportsbooks.
