MLB Betting – Strasburg, Gonzalez Continue To Pace First-Place Nationals

Nationals Baseball betting

Few online MLB betting experts outside of the nation’s capital picked the Washington Nationals to contend for the National League East title this season. Perhaps the biggest oversight that players made, was underestimating just how dominant the tandem at the top of the Nationals’ rotation would be in 2012. Washington ranks first in the majors in nearly every significant statistical category including ERA, with Stephen Strasburg and Gio Gonzalez the two biggest reasons for it. Both pitchers rank in the top-five in the majors in terms of strikeouts, with a combined 16-3 record and 2.40 ERA. The tandem of Strasburg and Gonzalez is easily one of the most dominant, if not the most dominant in the majors right now, and there is no reason to think that those two will slow down anytime soon.

Of course, there are no guarantees when it comes to online sports betting, but the way that management has handled each pitcher as an individual has added to the optimism from what Strasburg and Gonzalez have done so far. At just 23-years old, Strasburg has assumed his role as the team’s ace with an 8-1 record, 2.45 ERA, and leads the majors in strikeouts with 100 despite the fact that management is openly limiting his innings since he is coming off last year’s season-ending injury.

As for Gonzalez, nobody is complaining now about Washington reaching for the former Oakland Athletics standout, who is 8-2 with a 2.35 ERA. Gonzalez has earned the win in six of his last seven starts, and hasn’t allowed more than three earned runs in any of those appearances. At this pace, Gonzalez will shatter the career records he set while spending his first four seasons with the Athletics, only now the Nationals will be the beneficiary of his services. Jordan Zimmermann and Edwin Jackson have been solid despite not being as spectacular as the Strasburg-Gonzalez tandem, and as long as Washington continues to get consistency from its starters the pitching staff will not be exposed in the lines of the best sports betting sites online.

The Nationals could use a boost on offense however, as they are ranked 24th in the majors in terms of both runs scored and batting average. While Bryce Harper and Stephen Lombardozzi have both looked good in limited action, Ian Desmond has been among the most consistent offensive players for Washington with his .266 average and nine home runs, and absolutely must maintain that pace going forward. The Nationals will benefit from both Harper and Lombardozzi seeing more action, and if some of the veteran players on the sportsbook team cannot produce more consistently, it might open a spot for one or both to have the chance to prove themselves as regulars.

Washington will not have it easy over its next nine games, with consecutive home series’ against the New York Yankees and Tampa Bay Rays before they head on the road to take on the Baltimore Ravens. Pitching has been the difference for the Nationals so far this season for all the right reasons, and as long as Strasburg and Gonzalez continue to excel there is no reason to think that Washington will slow down in the NL East.
