Betting on Phillies Baseball

Players at the best online betting sites would have never expected Philadelphia’s Cliff Lee to still be looking for his first win of 2012, but here we are, almost to July and the former Cy Young winner doesn’t have a mark in the win column yet. He’ll try again on Friday when the Phillies begin a weekend set with the Tampa Bay Rays.

Rays Phillies Odds – Friday, 7:05 PM ET

James Shields (7-4, 3.72) earned a no-decision in a 15-inning 4-3 loss at home to Miami, allowing three runs on eight hits over 7.2 innings with five strikeouts and a walk. However, none of those runs were earned and sports betting sharps have to be confused by Tampa Bay’s defensive decline, and you know that Shields is perplexed. The 30-year-old has faced the Phillies once, way back in his rookie year in 2006, and he allowed three runs on six hits on the road in his fourth career start in a 10-4 romp. Those doing some MLB betting online (which you can bet on here), should also know that Shields is a strong 5-2 in seven road starts with a 3.72 ERA.

Lee (0-3, 3.48) was knocked for five runs on 12 hits over seven innings to take a no-decision in a 6-5 loss in Toronto, striking out three and walking one, and even though he has struggled with injuries, Lee just hasn’t had the same stuff that he has had in other years. That’s a shame because the Phillies need him more than other with Roy Halladay on the sidelines, and Lee just hasn’t been able to get it together in 2012. The 31-year-old southpaw is 6-5 in 13 career starts against the Rays with an ERA of 2.87, but all three of his losses have come at home, where he has a 3.53 ERA.

The best sportsbook online should favor the Phillies slightly at home, although the line won’t be leaning towards the Phillies as much as you’d think because of Lee’s struggles. Philadelphia has won six of the last 10 meetings between the two, but none since 2009, but remember, they beat the Rays in the 2008 World Series. You would have to think that Lee would find his way at some point, but how much longer can the Phillies afford to wait before they’re out of the running in the National League East? They need him to get back on track sooner than later, but Shields have pitched well this season and the Rays could be still harboring anger from 2008 as they have a lot of the same players, Shields included. Take the Rays on Thursday in your sportsbooks.
