MLB Betting – AL East Contenders Look To Set Tone In Series Openers Monday

by Dirty on June 11, 2012

Betting on Major League Baseball

The Tampa Bay Rays and Baltimore Orioles have established themselves as the top two teams in the American League East through the first two weeks of June. However, with all five teams sporting records above .500, a case can be made that any of those teams could come through and win the division in the end. The Toronto Blue Jays, New York Yankees, and Boston Red Sox are all in action on Monday, and will look to open the week on a winning note to set the tone with just four games on the MLB schedule.

Washington Nationals @ Toronto Blue Jays

Monday, 7:07 PM ET

The Blue Jays have kept their heads above water with a strong record at home, but in order to have any chance at challenging for a playoff spot they will need to be more consistent. Toronto’s offense ranks fifth in runs scored, but the pitching staff isn’t deep and has been exposed at times, including last week in Chicago where they lost at least one game to the White Sox that they should have had. One of the brightest spots on the Blue Jays’ pitching staff has been Brandon Morrow, who is 7-3 with a 2.90 ERA on the season. Morrow will get the call for the baseball betting series opener against the Nationals, opposite Edwin Jackson for Washington.

MLB Betting Pick: Toronto Blue Jays

New York Yankees @ Atlanta Braves

Monday, 7:10 PM ET

Similar to Toronto, the Yankees have scored a ton of runs but have struggled with their consistency for the most part because of an average pitching staff. The perfect example of New York’s offensive potential is Monday’s starter Ivan Nova, who despite a 5.09 ERA that would make him a sub-.500 pitcher on most major league teams, is 7-2 on the season. Nova will get the call opposite 22-year old Atlanta starter Randall Delgado, and while he could struggle to keep his earned runs down once again versus the Braves, look for the offense to bring in a ton of run support and get him another sports bet win.

MLB Betting Pick: New York Yankees

Boston Red Sox @ Miami Marlins

Monday, 7:10 PM ET

As far as inconsistency goes, you don’t have to go fishing much further than the Red Sox to find it. Despite such an up and down season that currently has Boston ranked fifth in the AL East, David Ortiz and company are still treading above the .500 mark and not out of contention in the division race. Monday’s starter Josh Beckett has been better of late, getting his ERA down from 5.97 to 4.04 despite not being able to get a win in any of his last three starts. That could change in Miami against Josh Johnson and the Marlins, as long as the Red Sox don’t get caught up in the spectacle that is playing in Miami for the first time since they moved to their new MLB stadium.

MLB Betting Pick: Boston Red Sox
