Making The Odds Work

Oddsmaking or linemaking in sports betting is a long process that involves some of the smartest and wisest professional gamblers in the industry. Setting up the line for the following week of NFL, or any sports match up, is usually done in a Sunday afternoon meeting of different sports gamblers.

Every game or match up is reviewed and every wise guy shares his individual theory on every match up. The line is set based on their collaborative ideas and the numbers that they have come up with are then forwarded to the Las Vegas Stardust. Here the management and other consultants review and make some necessary adjustments before posting the lines.

The sharks or the ‘Wise Guys’ of the business are professional bettors who make the final adjustment in the weekly line. They start by drawing straws to determine the first bettor. They take turns in making their bets affecting the lines that are then adjusted and balanced by the sports books. The betting goes on and stops when the last bettor sees no more gain on the next move.

The final line will be released on the following morning where the linemakers put the numbers that came up based on the decisions of the wiseguys involved in the process. Making up a line is a long process that only those who have enough patience have the chance to prosper.
