North Carolina is to March Madness betting what Tiger Woods is to golf betting: no matter what, you know they’re going to be right there at the end. The world’s No.1 has chosen to make his return to stroke play at Doral Golf Resort, site of the WGC-CA Championship, and Doral has been the site of many great “Tiger” moments. But Geoff Ogilvy is as dangerous as they come in terms of sportsbook underdogs, and those who bet sports will have to be careful when going over this weekend’s golf betting odds.
The WGCs should be renamed the Tiger Golf Championships. Woods has won an outlandish 15 of a possible 31 events, which is all the more impressive when you realize that the WGCs usually involve only the world’s best golfers. Woods has won six CA Championships, including three straight from 2005 to 2007. In 2005 and 2006, this event wasn’t held at Doral, but Woods still won the Doral Open, and he’s never finished out of the top ten at this course. All of these numbers add to Woods being favored in his head-to-head matchup with Ogilvy at -250.
It was Ogilvy who ended Woods’ drive for four consecutive CA Championships last year, and he also won the first WGC of the year two weeks ago when he thumped Paul Casey in the final of the Matchplay event. Ogilvy has now won three WGCs, which puts him second to Woods, a distant second, but second nonetheless. Ogilvy also won the season-opening Mercedes-Benz Championship, and he ranks first in birdies and second in putting. This is a very dangerous equation for an underdog, which Ogilvy is at +200.
Golf betting players know that Ogilvy won’t back down from a Sunday showdown with Woods, which adds another element of danger. He’s been extremely consistent, and when he’s confident, Ogilvy has proven he can play with anyone in the world (see his U.S. Open win in 2006 for more proof). However, Woods thrives on the challenge of playing the best golfers in the world (see his 14 majors for more proof), and while he is the sportsbook favorite, many don’t think that Woods can win as it’s his first stroke-play tournament in almost nine months. This should spark Woods even more. Bet on Tiger Woods this weekend.
