Sources: Memphis fires coach West

Memphis fired football coach Tommy West on Monday morning, sources close to the situation confirmed to ESPN.com.
Memphis athletics director R.C. Johnson told West of his decision this morning. The school is expected to announce the firing at a noon ET news conference.
West had a 49-58 record in 10 seasons at Memphis. The Tigers fell to 2-7 this season after losing to Tennessee 56-28 on Saturday. Memphis is in last place in the C-USA East Division with a 1-4 record against conference foes.
West led the Tigers to five bowl games in the last six seasons. Memphis was 6-7 last season, losing to South Florida 41-14 in the St. Petersburg Bowl.
Memphis is expected to attempt to hire a high-profile coach to replace West. Possible candidates include former Auburn coach Tommy Tuberville and Division II North Alabama coach Terry Bowden, another former Auburn coach.

Hilltoppers dismiss Elson in 7th season

Western Kentucky have fired coach David Elson amid the Hilltoppers' first fully eligible season for Football Bowl Subdivision play, a source told ESPN.com's Pat Forde on Monday.
Western Kentucky fell to 0-9 and 0-5 in the Sun Belt Conference after a 40-20 loss Saturday to Troy.
Elson, 39-41 in seven seasons as the Hilltoppers' coach, was fired Sunday night, the source said, but will finish the season with the team.
A press conference was set for Monday at 2 p.m. ET to announce the move.
