The pair died of apparent gunshots wounds and were found in an apartment near the old General Hospital on Rolling Mill Hill. The woman, sources say, was approximately 20 years of age.

While details are sketchy at this time, NashvillePost.com sources say that the scene could be double homicide, a murder/suicide, or made to look like a murder/suicide. Metro Police said they have identified the woman, but are not releasing her name until the family has been notified.

    Steve McNair shot to death

Former Titans QB dead at age 36
[UPDATED 9:57 p.m. July 4: Police ID woman killed, reveal Thursday DUI stop]

Email | Print By Nate Rau and Ken Whitehouse

    07-04-2009 3:18 PM — [UPDATED 9:57 p.m. July 4]
Metro Police Saturday night confirmed that former Tennessee Titans quarterback Steve McNair, 36, and a 20-year-old woman, were found dead in the living room of a downtown Nashville condominium co-rented by McNair.
Medical Examiner staff concluded that McNair was the victim of multiple bullet wounds, police spokesman Don Aaron said late Saturday night, at least one to the head, and the woman, Sahel Kazemi, died of a single gunshot wound to the head. A pistol was found near her body.
The pair was found early Saturday afternoon in the condominium at 2nd and Lea Avenues in Rutledge Hill by the other co-renter, Wayne Neeley. Police reported receiving the first call at 1:35 p.m.
Metro Police Homicide detectives are investigating the shooting death and the circumstances surrounding it. Aaron gave few additional details, mentioning only that witnesses saw McNair and Kazemi arrive at the condo early Saturday morning and that the pair was involved in a DUI after a traffic stop early Thursday.

While details are sketchy at this time, NashvillePost.com sources say that the scene could be double homicide, a murder/suicide, or made to look like a murder/suicide. NashvillePost.com has reported that McNair was approached and threatened at a Nashville restaurant Friday evening, though Aaron would not comment on that or any other theory.
An autopsy is planned for Sunday morning, police said.

Police reported that Kazemi was pulled over about 1:20 a.m. Thursday on 9th Ave. S. near Broadway, driving an SUV registered to both her and McNair, who was traveling with her in the passenger seat at the time. The SUV was at the condo when police arrived at the crime scene, Aaron said.
A police report on the DUI bust said the Cadillac Escalade driven by Kazemi was clocked at 54 miles per hour in the 30 -m.p.h. zone along Broadway just past 12th Ave. S. "She refused a breath test," the arresting officer reported. "She said she was not drunk, she was high."

McNair, immensely popular in Nashville, played 13 seasons with the Titans/Houston Oilers and was a three-time Pro Bowler. He was the NFL's co-MVP (along with Peyton Manning) in 2003, before spending two seasons with the Baltimore Ravens, before retiring in 2008.
"He was one of the finest players to play for our organization and one of the most beloved players by our fans," Titans owner Bud Adams said Saturday in a statement. "He played with unquestioned heart and leadership and led us to places that we had never reached, including our only Super Bowl."
The team's former general manager was also "deeply saddened to learn of [Saturday's] tragic news.
"He was a player who I admired a great deal," said New England Patriots senior football adviser Floyd Reese, who was GM of the Titans when McNair played there. "He was a tremendous leader and an absolute warrior. I don't think there was a player who played with him or against him that didn't look up to him and respect him.
"My heartfelt condolences go out to his family, his friends and the many teammates who loved and admired him," Reese said.
McNair is survived by sons, Junior, Steven, Tyler, and Trenton.
"We don't know the details, but it is a terrible tragedy and our hearts go out to the families involved," added NFL commissioner Roger Goodell in a statement.
Titans coach Jeff Fisher is in Iraq, taking part in the first NFL-USO coaches tour.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Former NFL quarterback Steve McNair was shot multiple times, including once in the head, and a pistol was discovered near the body of the 20-year-old woman found dead with him Saturday in a downtown condominium.
Nashville police spokesman Don Aaron identified the woman as Sahel Kazemi, whom he called a "friend" of McNair's. She had a single gunshot wound to the head.
    Career Notes

Steve McNair was drafted third overall by the Houston Oilers in 1995 and last played for the Ravens in 2007. Here's a look at the quarterback's 13-year NFL career:

    • Honored as three-time Pro Bowler
    • Shared league's MVP award with Peyton Manning in 2003
    • Led Tennessee to Super Bowl XXXIV, the only such appearance in franchise history, where the Titans lost to the Rams 23-16
    • Joined Fran Tarkenton and Steve Young as the only players to pass for 30,000 yards and rush for 3,500 yards

Police said the 36-year-old McNair was found on the sofa in the living room, and Kazemi was very close to him on the floor. Aaron said the gun was not "readily apparent" when police first arrived.
    Autopsies were planned for Sunday.
Aaron said McNair's wife, Mechelle, is "very distraught."
"At this juncture, we do not believe she is involved," he said. "Nothing has been ruled out, but as far as actively looking for a suspect tonight, the answer would be no."
The bodies were discovered Saturday afternoon by McNair's longtime friend Wayne Neeley, who rents the condo with McNair.
Aaron said Neeley told authorities he went into the condo, saw McNair on the sofa and Kazemi on the floor but walked first into the kitchen before going back into the living room, where he saw the blood.
Neeley then called a friend, who alerted authorities.
Police said a witness saw McNair arrive at the condo between 1:30 and 2 a.m. Saturday and that Kazemi's vehicle was already there.
Two days ago, Nashville police arrested Kazemi on a DUI charge while driving a 2007 Escalade registered to her and McNair. McNair was in the front seat, but didn't break the law and was allowed to leave by taxi.
The arrest affidavit said Kazemi had bloodshot eyes and the smell of alcohol on her breath, but refused a breathalyzer test, saying "she was not drunk, she was high."
Police remained at the condo Saturday night after the bodies were removed, but most of the bystanders had gone home.
Fred McNair, Steve McNair's oldest brother, said some family members likely will travel to Nashville on Monday to consult with Steve McNair's wife.
[+] EnlargeAP Photo/Ed RodePolice held up a sheet while taking a body out of the Nashville apartment where Steve McNair was shot on Saturday.

"It's still kind of hard to believe," Fred McNair said. "He was the greatest person in the world. He gave back to the community. He loved kids and he wanted to be a role model to kids."
He said he did not know who Kazemi was.
Fred McNair said his brother just finished a football camp for teenagers on June 25 in Hattiesburg, Miss.
No funeral arrangements have been made.
The McNair family released this statement through McNair's agent Bus Cook: "The families of Steve McNair in Mississippi and Tennessee appreciate the concern, thoughts and prayers during this difficult time of our loss of a husband, father and son. The family requests everyone would allow them time to mourn. The McNair Family appreciates and continues to request your prayers at this time."
In June, McNair opened a restaurant near the Tennessee State University campus. It was closed Saturday evening, but had become a small memorial, where flowers, candles and notes had been placed outside the door.
On the restaurant's windows were messages: "We will miss you Steve" and "We love you Steve."
A note attached to a small blue teddy bear read, "We will never forget you, Steve. Once a Titan, always a Titan."

    Steve McNair: 1973-2009

The news of former NFL quarterback Steve McNair's passing drew reaction from across the sports world. Reaction

McNair, a three-time Pro Bowler, led the Titans within a yard of forcing overtime in the 2000 Super Bowl, which they lost 23-16 to the St. Louis Rams. He also played for the Baltimore Ravens before retiring in April 2008.
His most noted drive, the last one in that Super Bowl, came when he led the Titans 87 yards in the final minute and 48 seconds, only to come up a yard short of the tying touchdown. Kevin Dyson caught his 9-yard pass, but was tackled at the 1-yard line by the Rams' Mike Jones.
McNair accounted for all of Tennessee's yards in that drive, throwing for 48 yards and rushing for 14. The rest of the yardage came on penalties against the Rams. Before that, he brought the Titans back from a 16-0 deficit to tie the game.
"We don't know the details, but it is a terrible tragedy and our hearts go out to the families involved," NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said in a statement.
"We are saddened and shocked to hear the news of Steve McNair's passing today," Titans owner Bud Adams said in a statement. "He was one of the finest players to play for our organization and one of the most beloved players by our fans. He played with unquestioned heart and leadership and led us to places that we had never reached, including our only Super Bowl."
"If you were going to draw a football player, the physical part, the mental part, everything about being a professional, he is your guy," former Ravens and Titans teammate Samari Rolle said. "I can't even wrap my arms around it. It is a sad, sad day. The world lost a great man today."
McNair began his career in 1995 with the Houston Oilers, who eventually became the Titans, and finished with 31,304 yards passing and 174 touchdowns. McNair played with pain for several years, and the injuries ultimately forced him to retire.
"On the field, there isn't player that was as tough as him, especially at the quarterback position," the Ravens' Derrick Mason said. "What I have seen him play through on the field, and what he dealt with during the week to get ready for a game, I have never known a better teammate."
During a five-game stretch at the end of the 2002 season, McNair was so bruised he couldn't practice. But he started all five games and won them, leading the Titans to an 11-5 finish and a berth in the AFC championship game for the second time in four seasons.
McNair played all 16 games in 2006, his first season in Baltimore, and guided the Ravens to a 13-3 record. But he injured his groin during the season opener last season and never regained the form that put him in those Pro Bowls.
"I am deeply saddened to learn of today's tragic news regarding the death of Steve McNair. He was a player who I admired a great deal," said New England Patriots senior football adviser Floyd Reese, who was GM of the Titans when McNair played for them. "He was a tremendous leader and an absolute warrior. He felt like it was his responsibility to lead by working hard every day, no matter what."
Titans coach Jeff Fisher was out of the country, taking part in the first NFL-USO coaches tour to Iraq.
Ozzie Newsome, Ravens executive vice president and general manager, said he immediately thought of McNair's four sons.
"This is so, so sad. We immediately think of his family, his boys. They are all in our thoughts and prayers," he said "What we admired most about Steve when we played against him was his competitive spirit, and we were lucky enough to have that with us for two years. He is one of the best players in the NFL over the last 20 years."
The Associated Press contributed to this report.

How McNair’s brief affair ended in tragedy

    The Associated Press
    Monday, July 06, 2009
Nashville, Tenn. — The star quarterback and the waitress met six months ago, at a restaurant where she worked and his family often ate. He was married and 16 years older, but she seemed happy and eager to build a life with him.
Steve McNair was retired from the NFL and spending time again in Nashville, where he had spent the best years of his career. Sahel Kazemi was 20 years old and swept up: He gave her an Escalade for her birthday and took her on trips to Las Vegas and Key West, Fla..

“She just had it made, you know, this guy taking care of everything,” her nephew, Farzin Abdi, said Monday.
They were found dead on the Fourth of July — McNair from two gunshots each to the head and chest, Kazemi from a single shot to the side of the head. Police said Monday that Kazemi had bought a gun Thursday night from someone they did not identify.
On Monday, as the coach of the Tennessee Titans remembered McNair as the man who put the franchise on the map and police continued their investigation, more details of their relationship continued to come to light.
Kazemi appeared confident the pair would last and had introduced her family to McNair, her nephew said. Abdi quoted her as saying McNair was divorcing his wife and that it would be finalized soon.
“I think she had already put her stuff up for sale on Craigslist,” Abdi said.
The first sign of trouble was early Thursday morning. Police stopped Kazemi on Broadway, not far from the honky-tonks where throaty country singers belt out tales of unfaithful spouses. She was driving the Escalade SUV that McNair gave her for her birthday in May.
According to an arrest affidavit, Kazemi had bloodshot eyes and alcohol on her breath. She refused a breath test and told an officer “she was not drunk, she was high.” She was charged with DUI.
McNair was with her but not charged. He later made her bail.
The next night, McNair was out late with friends, but he and Kazemi got together at a downtown condo within sight of the Titans stadium, a pad McNair shared with a friend. A witness told police the quarterback arrived between 1:30 and 2 a.m. Her car was already there.
When McNair’s roommate, Wayne Neeley, got to the condo at midday, what he thought he saw was his friend sitting on the couch and Kazemi lying on the floor. So he went into the kitchen. Then he saw the blood, police said.
Officers said they found a gun under her body. There were no signs of forced entry into the condo. Police labeled McNair’s death a homicide Sunday but said they were reviewing every possibility before labeling Kazemi’s.
Mechelle McNair, his wife of 12 years and mother of two of his four sons born between 1991 and 2004, has been described by police as very distraught about his death and has not commented on it. McNair’s brother, Fred, said the day of the shootings that he had never heard of Kazemi.
No court records of divorce proceedings have surfaced so far. The strongest public evidence that the McNairs might have been estranged is that their 14,000-square-foot Nashville home has been up for sale recently, listed at $3 million.
McNair, 36, retired from the NFL last year. He had earned the respect of fellow players for shaking off defenders and injuries and the love of fans amazed at how the quarterback kept showing up for work — and winning.
He was known as Air McNair because of his passing prowess and was named to four Pro Bowls in 13 NFL seasons. He shared the NFL’s MVP award with Peyton Manning of the Indianapolis Colts in 2003. In 2000, he led the Titans to the Super Bowl, where they fell one yard short of a last-second touchdown to tie the game.
In retirement, McNair had opened a restaurant, the Gridiron9, near the Tennessee State University campus. It sells deep-fried hot dogs for $3.50, Cajun catfish sandwiches for $6.50 and Southern-style chicken strips for $6.75.
Television news footage showed McNair putting used trays away inside the eatery after dumping scraps in a trash can.
“He had a sweet spirit,” Kimberly Hardy, a 25-year-old McNair admirer, said outside the restaurant, where mourners have been gathering and leaving flowers and writing notes on the front window.
The night before he died, McNair went alone to the Blue Moon Lagoon Restaurant where he met another couple around 10:30 p.m. and then left by himself about 1 a.m., said James Weathers, manager of the restaurant.
Weathers said McNair visited there occasionally and “was always alone, but he’d meet a group of friends.” The manager described McNair as always friendly, “never a big drinker,” gracious with constant photo-seekers.
Earlier this year, Kazemi and McNair took trips to Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Key West, Fla., and Mississippi, said Abdi, the nephew. McNair had been seen at Kazemi’s Nashville apartment two to three times a week, so often neighbors wondered whether he had moved in.
“They were together all the time unless he was taking his kids on vacation,” Abdi said.
Kazemi was born in Iran but left in 2000, fleeing religious persecution for their Baha’i faith, Abdi said. They spent 2? years in Turkey before moving to Florida. Later Kazemi dropped out of high school and, at age 17, moved with a boyfriend to Nashville, where she sometimes worked two or three jobs to support herself.
She liked not depending on anyone for money, and she told her nephew that McNair admired her independent nature.
“He liked her so much because they would go shopping and stuff and she would want to spend her own money,” Abdi said. “The reason he said he loves her is because she’s not trying to use him like other girls. She was different from other girls he had been with.”
