Week 1 Odds fluctuations

The NFL Week 1 odds have been out for a few weeks and there have been some recent fluctuations. Here are the biggest ones from BroburySports.com.

The first game is the defending champion New Orleans Saints (-5) hosting the Minnesota Vikings. The spread was off the board as Brett Favre hadn?t signed yet. Favre is back, but will be missing receiver Sidney Rice (hip), and these odds reflect that.

Cincinnati has dropped from six points to four at New England. The Patriots are very young at cornerback after losing Leigh Bodden for the season. Cincinnati has a number of passing weapons, including Chad Ochocinco and Terrell Owens. Ochocinco has already talked about a new touchdown celebration if he scores this week.

The Detroit Lions were seven-points ?dogs at Chicago, but have dropped to six. Quarterback Matthew Stafford looks to be much improved in his sophomore year. Meanwhile, Chicago quarterback Jay Cutler is struggling in the new Mike Martz? offense. He was an interception machine last year with 26.

Green Bay has jumped from one-point favorites at Philadelphia to three points. The Packers? offense is really clicking and could be the NFC?s best. The Eagles are a boom-or-bust type team with quarterback Kevin Kolb taking over for Donovan McNabb.

Baltimore has gone from +3 to +2 at the New York Jets on Monday night. New York just got cornerback Darrelle Revis signed and he?ll be starting in this game. This is a battle of Jets coach Rex Ryan against his old team that passed him over as head coach.

Note the Dallas spread is back up, staying steady at -3 �-points at Washington on Sunday night. Redskins? quarterback Donovan McNabb (ankle) looks able to play. The Cowboys first-team offense really struggled in the preseason.

Four Week 1 divisional matchups are currently hovering right around that magic number of three, give or take half a point, and the road team is favored in all of them: Indianapolis at HoustonHouston has their sights set on their first ever playoff berth as the Colts remain heavy favorites to win the AFC South. The Texans can score in bunches, and they come off a season in which they lead the NFL in passing. They’ve lost six straight to Indianapolis, but five of those games were within eight points. The Colts, a perennial playoff team, went 7-1 ATS & 7-1 SU on the road in the 2009 regular season; that one loss was a meaningless Week 17 game in which Peyton Manning was pulled in the second quarter. Play on: Indianapolis -2.5 Miami at BuffaloMiami acquired Pro Bowl wide receiver Brandon Marshall to improve a pass offense that ranked 23rd in yards per attempt last season. The Phins are a 3-point road favorite, having gone 10-2 ATS on the road against conference foes over the last two years. Buffalo hopes that new head coach Chan Gailey can breathe life into a dismal passing game that ranked 30th in the NFL last season. The Bills are actually 5-2 ATS & 5-2 SU over the past two Septembers, losing only at New England and against New Orleans in that span. Play on: Miami -3 Dallas at WashingtonMike Shanahan will try to resurrect the Redskins after a 4-12 season in which they went 0-6 in divisional games. The Cowboys finally got over the playoff drought that had stricken the franchise for 15 years, beating Philly in a wildcard game last January—the proverbial monkey may be off Tony Romo’s back. These teams don’t like one another, and whether McNabb is healthy enough to start will obviously have a big impact on how this one plays out. The road team is on a 5-1 ATS run in this head-to-head series. Play on: Dallas -3.5 San Francisco at SeattleSan Francisco is the favorite to win the NFC West, coming off an 8-8 season with six losses by a touchdown or less. The Niners were among the league leaders defensively in several key categories last season and are 14-7-4 ATS under Mike Singletary. Off a 5-11 season, new head coach Pete Carroll has overhauled Seattle’s roster. Week 3 of the NFL preseason is hotly anticipated as starters will play the majority of the game. Here�s a look at the best contests from BroburySports.com.

New York Giants (NL) at Baltimore Ravens � Saturday 7:30 pm ET

Expect Baltimore to be around a touchdown favorite when the spread is released. Note there�s no national broadcast for this game.

Quarterback Eli Manning is going to play after missing last week. He suffered a facial laceration in the opener against the Jets and it will be interesting to see how long he plays. Rhett Bomar is the backup with Jim Sorgi currently injured as well.

Baltimore has played well at 2-0 straight-up (SU) and ATS in the preseason. Those wins were against Carolina and Washington, with 15 total points allowed. Quarterback Joe Flacco needs to have a good game in likely his last snaps before the regular season.

Dallas Cowboys (+3) at Houston Texans � Saturday 8 pm ET

This game between in-state rivals will be broadcast on CBS.

Dallas is 2-1 SU and ATS in the preseason. They�re on their fourth game already, having played in the Hall of Fame game in Canton, Ohio. Quarterback Tony Romo and the offense haven�t done much so far. Their highest point total in a game is 16.

Houston has been stuck on the road. First was a trip to Arizona when the reserves blew a 16-0 lead in the fourth quarter. Next was at New Orleans, with the Saints dominating 38-20. Houston needs to find their running game as they can�t just rely on quarterback Matt Schaub.

Pittsburgh Steelers (-2) at Denver Broncos � Sunday 8 pm ET

This is the only Sunday NFL game with no Monday contest. Fox will broadcast nationally.

Pittsburgh is expected to start quarterback Ben Roethlisberger. That�s a curious decision as he�s suspended for at least the first four regular season games. Dennis Dixon should come in next and he could be supplanting Byron Leftwich as the opening day starter.

Denver has a steady quarterback in Kyle Orton right now, but not much else. The running backs have been hit hard by injuries and the defense has looked very shaky. They allowed 58 total points in losses against Cincinnati and Detroit.

This may be the most popular prop on the board. Not only were these two players teammates last year, but McNabb was shipped within the division to Washington. Philadelphia?s Kolb has looked better in his training camp than McNabb. He also has better receivers with DeSean Jackson and Jeremy Maclin.

Adrian Peterson vs. Chris Johnson ? Most Rushing Yards

Johnson is -150.5 yards with -115 odds. Peterson is +150.5 yards with -115 odds.

Johnson broke the 2,000 yard barrier last year (2,006) and claims he?s going for 2,500 this year. Minnesota?s Peterson had 1,383 yards last year in 16 games, after 1,760 in 2008. I?m not convinced Johnson is big enough to get 350-plus carries again this year. These guys will be neck-and neck.

Greg Jennings vs. Steve Smith ? Most Receiving Yards

Jennings should easily be the top target in a very potent Green Bay passing attack. Carolina?s Smith fractured his arm, but should be back for opening week. However, he still has the untested Matt Moore throwing him the ball.

After tonight’s ESPN contest, only two weeks remain until the games start to actually mean something. Favre to start Sunday night

Brett Favre will start Sunday night for the Minnesota Vikings at the San Francisco 49ers and BroburySports.com has the latest odds.

Minnesota is a three-point underdog to San Francisco with a total of 35-points. Bet on this game on Friday at Brobury and get half-priced juice (-105).

Favre will play a series or two Sunday night, much to the delight of NBC?s Sunday Night Football. The ratings will surely go through the roof, making this one of the top rated preseason games.

The Vikings won their preseason opener last Saturday, 28-7 at St. Louis. Nobody knew the status of Favre at that point and Tarvaris Jackson was limited to one series. It will be interesting to see how Jackson plays from here on out as he has to be disappointed about losing his starter role once again.

Jackson didn?t do much against St. Louis, but the backup (now third stringer) Sage Rosenfels did. Rosenfels went 23-of-34 for 310 yards and three touchdowns. He?s proving he?s too good to be a third stringer and could be traded soon.

San Francisco won its opener as well, 37-17 at Indianapolis. However, Indy was winning 10-0 before Peyton Manning left the game and the 49ers took advantage of the ineptitude of backup Curtis Painter (three interceptions).

The 49ers have their own quarterback issues. Alex Smith is clearly the No. 1, but he had a 7.4 quarterback rating and was 3-of-9 for 37 yards and an interception. David Carr is the backup, but Smith has to play well for the team to justify heavy -130 odds to win the NFC West.

The rest of the division odds are Arizona (+200), Seattle (+350) and St. Louis (+2500). The expectations are high in the Bay Area as the favorite and San Francisco should come out with a good game on Sunday.

CFL Football Preview: Hamilton Tiger-Cats vs. Toronto Argonauts

The Hamilton Tiger-Cats and the Toronto Argonauts will both be gunning for a victory on Friday when they meet at Rogers Centre.

Oddsmakers currently have the Argonauts listed as 2�-point favorites versus the Tiger-Cats, while the game's total has not yet been posted.

Kevin Glenn threw for 274 yards and three touchdowns as the Tiger-Cats defeated the Blue Bombers 39-28 in Week 7. The Tiger-Cats won the game as 4.5-point underdogs, and the combined 67 points sailed OVER the posted total of 54.5.

Arland Bruce continued his dominance with 64 yards receiving and a TD in that win for Hamilton.

Patriots head south to face Falcons

The New England Patriots and Atlanta Falcons meet up Thursday night in a great preseason matchup. Here?s the preview from BroburySports.com.

Atlanta is a 2 �-point home favorite at Brobury with a total of 37 points. FOX will broadcast at 8 pm ET.

Both teams are coming off opening preseason wins. New England beat New Orleans 27-24 as 1 �-point home favorites. The Pats had a 24-7 lead at one point, but let up a kickoff return for a touchdown and needed a late field goal to win.

New England looks to have all the pieces on offense, even with Wes Welker?s knee injury from last year. He traveled with the team and could play, but they should be able to score even without him. Quarterback Tom Brady seems extra motivated as he nears a contract extension with the team.

The Patriots have a lot of young pieces on defense and played well against the Saints. The loss of defensive end Ty Warren for the year hurts, and a number of other defenders are listed as questionable this week.

Atlanta is 10/1 to win the NFC, while New England is 5/1 in the AFC. The Falcons were as hurt as any team in football last year with quarterback Matt Ryan and running back Michael Turner both missing time.

Both guys are healthy now and they beat Kansas City 20-10 last week as 2 �-point home favorites. That game would have been a lot closer if not for Kansas City turnovers. The Falcons are missing cornerback Dunta Robinson and some other key defenders for Thursday.

They?ll have to play a lot better to take down New England.

Brett Favre watch

The Brett Favre news is breaking once again and this time there shouldn?t be any changes. He?s officially back with the Vikings and even practiced with the team on Wednesday. Favre said he was doing the team a ?favor? by coming back.

Minnesota is back down to 4/1 to win the NFC at Brobury. That puts them tied with rival Green Bay and just behind Dallas and defending champ New Orleans (both +350). The NFC North odds haven?t been updated, but Minny should be close with the Packers.

The Vikings dropped to 10/1 to win the NFC a couple of weeks ago after Favre reportedly texted his teammates he was going to retire. The thought of Tarvaris Jackson being the full-time starter sent oddsmakers into a tizzy.

Now Favre will have to back up his decision by playing well.
