Georgia Tech Vs. Jacksonville State -- Thursday, August 28, 2008
Ok guys.. I am throwing out some random thoughts here....
Tech has 75 Freshmen and Sophmores on the 110 man limit Roster and 60 of Those are on Scholarship... so that only leaves 20 Upper classmen.. as Tech is on 80 Scholarship Limit until Next year
5Dimes is the only Book I have seen with a Line on the Game.

True Freshman Jaybo Shaw will also see playing Time at QB. He is a local boy here from Flowery Branch High School and has been running Johnson's offense since he was 5 years old.
Also...they are saying this may be Tech's Best Defense ever... They have some experience at End, Interior and Middle Linebacker...but not much else...This unit will gel but may take some time.. Only 4 starters are back on D but they all 4 will be All ACC Most likely... They are deep but very young..Look for tons of growing pains... I will be happy with a 5 win season.
Offense is what I am worried about .. Nesbit (the starter) has played Sparingly in his time at Tech and only has around 50 Snaps I believe to his credit and only a few passes.... But he is Talented...Shaw ran this offense in High School. He is from my area and put up some great numbers at Flowery Branch High (right next to Falcons Complex), but I don't think he is ready for Big Time Football yet......They have a lot of Talent at WR and RB but every where else they are very young and inexperienced...
Will they win Tomorrow Night..Yes... but I don't believe they cover.. It will be 24-10 or something like that... Perrilloux will make some plays and it will be up to Techs Front to get to him. If they don't, then the inexperience of the rest of the Field will cause Trouble.
Weather will not be a Problem... Supposed to be Clear and in the upper 60's....The Field has been covered so it will be dry despite the 10" of rain that has fallen over the Atlanta area the last few days

The Associated Press POSTED Aug. 26, 2008 10:41 p.m. ATLANTA — It should be no surprise that Jaybo Shaw has been a quick study in Paul Johnson's option offense.
Shaw has been studying the offense since he was 5 years old.
Shaw was coached by his father, Lee Shaw, at Flowery Branch High School. Lee Shaw, who previously coached at Rabun County, White County and Stephens County in north Georgia, says his son is "football smart."
"When he was 5 and 6 he was mimicking our quarterback and taking those option steps," said Lee Shaw. "I'd call out a play and he'd make the steps. He's always been right in it, right by my side at practice."
When Johnson was still the coach at Navy, he thought Jaybo Shaw was a good match for his offense and tried to sign him.
"I loved the option because I've been in it and know that I can do it, but I just didn't want to do the military thing," Shaw said.
So Shaw instead gave a verbal commitment to Middle Tennessee State.
Then came news from Georgia Tech that made Shaw quickly change that commitment.
"Word got out that Coach Johnson may be getting the job here," Shaw said after a Georgia Tech practice this week. "As soon as that happened I decommitted from Middle Tennessee."
Johnson paid the Shaws an in-home visit, and Jaybo Shaw says he committed to Georgia Tech the next day.
Shaw moved quickly past more experienced quarterbacks to win the backup job behind starter Josh Nesbitt for Thursday night's opener against Jacksonville State.
"I'm very thankful," Shaw said. "People may question that a true freshman comes in here and gets a few snaps on Thursday night, but I just want to try to take advantage of every opportunity and show what I can do."
There's another young Shaw running the Flowery Branch High School offense this year.
Connor Shaw, almost 2 inches taller than the 6-foot, 190-pound Jaybo, is a junior at Flowery Branch and already has been offered a scholarship by Georgia Tech, according to Lee Shaw, who says Georgia, Auburn, South Carolina, Clemson and other schools also are interested.
"The bigger schools probably are hitting on Connor earlier," said Lee Shaw. "Jaybo opened a lot of doors for people here at Flowery Branch."
Lee Shaw switched offenses after Jaybo's sophomore season to a shotgun attack that also included option schemes.
"He got us in so many correct plays," said Lee Shaw of Jaybo. "His senior year he probably checked off 85 percent of the time."
Jaybo Shaw said he still consults with his dad after every practice.
"He asks every day how was practice and how are classes coming," Shaw said. "He tries to come out here when he can and watch practice, but of course he's got a team to coach. My family will be here Thursday night, and I'm very grateful for that."
Johnson said he expects to play Shaw one or two series.
"I think he's good enough to help us win the game, so we're going to put him in there and see what he does under fire," Johnson said.
Shaw didn't enroll at Georgia Tech for spring semester and couldn't participate in spring practice, but still he says he showed up every day to watch and learn as he prepared to switch back to the option.
"It did take some time to get back used to taking the snap and getting the reads," he said.
The freshman didn't need long to learn Johnson's version of the offense he's studied most of his life.
"I knew he'd compete," said Lee Shaw. "He's football smart as well. He understands structures of defenses. I knew once he got to the next level, he would grow more. There was a lot of room for improvement. That's a fantastic coaching staff and I knew they would take him on."
Shaw said he may have an advantage over returning quarterbacks, including senior Calvin Booker, who had to forget the offense they ran last year under former coach Chan Gailey.
"I really think it was great to come in with a new coach," Shaw said. "I'd rather do that instead of having to go through a coaching change, because I think that's really tough.
I haven't used 5Dimes, but a couple of years ago I used BetUS and they had 30 cent lines on all 1-AA lines - I'm guessing they add some juice because there isn't as much action and the lines aren't as tight?
ATLANTA (AP) -Paul Johnson's option offense was a hit for Georgia Tech, and Ryan Perrilloux couldn't keep pace for Jacksonville State. Jonathan Dwyer and quarterback Josh Nesbitt each ran for two touchdowns, Morgan Burnett intercepted two first-half passes by Perrilloux and Georgia Tech beat Jacksonville State 41-14 on Thursday night.
Perrilloux was in line to start for LSU this season before being dismissed by the Tigers for disciplinary reasons. Looking for a place to play immediately, he landed at the FCS school and immediately became the starter.
He was 22-for-37 passing for 136 yards, including two touchdown passes to Maurice Dupree. Perrilloux led the Gamecocks with 18 carries for 67 yards.
The second scoring pass from Perrilloux to Dupree, covering 16 yards, came with 37 seconds left.
Johnson, the former Navy coach, had his triple-option offense ready after much concern based on a rash of turnovers in the spring game and summer scrimmages. Georgia Tech ran for 349 yards and had 484 total yards.
Dwyer had 10 carries for 113 yards.
Georgia Tech (1-0) bills the new attack the "perfect option." The slogan seemed a good fit when even the Yellow Jackets' first fumble had a perfect ending. Nesbitt fumbled a snap near the goal line early in the second quarter but picked up the loose ball and scored from the 1.
Nesbitt also scored on a 2-yard run in the first quarter, and Dwyer had touchdown runs of 21 and 29 yards. Roddy Jones took a pitch from Nesbitt and ran 49 yards for a third-quarter touchdown, one of eight plays for Georgia Tech of 20 yards or longer.
Jones also caught a 39-yard pass from Nesbitt, who was 5-for-12 passing for 87 yards. Nesbitt rushed 11 times for 60 yards.
Freshman quarterback Jaybo Shaw played most of the second half for Georgia Tech and had a 33-yard run to set up his 2-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.
Perrilloux was making his second start in Atlanta. He was named MVP of the Southeastern Conference championship game for LSU last season.
The Gamecocks were picked to win the Ohio Valley Conference, but the Football Championship Subdivision team was overmatched.
Jacksonville State trailed 21-0 before it finally managed a first down on a 10-yard run by Dupree with 12:30 left in the first half.
Georgia Tech's first turnover, a fumbled kickoff return by James Lipfert on the first play of the second half, set up Jacksonville State's first touchdown.
The Gamecocks took possession at Georgia Tech's 33. Perrilloux had runs of 12 and 15 yards before his 5-yard scoring pass to Dupree.
