Few expected them to battle their way out of the Group of Death, but that’s exactly what Portugal did in the group play round of Euro 2012. Now they find themselves climbing the soccer odds as fans contemplate whether their quarter-final berth can be attributed more to skill or their rather fortunate circumstances.

Portugal didn’t exceed expectations so much as they benefited from the Netherlands failing to meet theirs. Still, a big win over the Dutch on Sunday allowed them to clinch their spot in the knockout round.

Having come up short against Germany, but defeating the Netherlands and Denmark, the Portugese can thank Denmark for kicking off the tournament with a victory over the Dutch that shocked the Euro betting line.

This Thursday, when the quarter-finals begin, Portugal will get a chance to prove their mettle against a Czech Republic team which came out of Group A relatively unscathed.

Although neither stand as high up on the Euro futures as Germany or Group C’s Spain, Portugal is the best bet in the eyes of oddsmakers. With 6/1 odds of winning it all, one has to wonder whether they can hold up against the rest of tournament’s elite.
