Olympic Betting Preview – USA, Spain clash for gold-medal glory
August 22, 2008
The USA mens’ basketball team moved one step closer to the gold medal by dispatching of the defending Olympic champions, and only a team that they have already routed stands in their way as they will face Spain early on Sunday morning.
USA vs. Spain – Sunday, August 24, 2:30 AM
The Americans made short work of 2004 champions Argentina, racing out to a 30-11 first-quarter lead before rolling to a 101-81 victory. Carmelo Anthony led the way with 21 points, while LeBron James scored 13 of his 15 points after halftime. Argentina fought gamely, especially after team leader Manu Ginobili left the game with an ankle injury in the first quarter, but the Americans just had too much athleticism and team speed for the Argentinians to overcome.
Spain held on for a 91-86 win over Lithuania to reach the gold-medal game for the first time since Los Angeles in 1984, with Pau Gasol netting 19 points. The Spaniards could not pull away from their opponents after a quick start, but their experience in winning the World Championships in 2006 definitely came through for them.
These two teams met in the preliminary round, and it was not even close as the Americans romped to a 119-82 win. As with most of their games, the first quarter was close, but then Team USA kicked their game into another gear and just ran away from Spain. Undoubtedly, Spain will have some confidence from their semifinal win, but the Americans are far too deep and on top of that, they are completely focused on winning the gold. Take Team USA to reclaim their place as the world’s greatest basketball nation with a win on Sunday.

Olympics Betting Preview – USA takes on defending champions from Argentina
August 21, 2008
Can Manu Ginobli Lead Argentina to an Upset of the “Redeem Team”?
The USA mens’ basketball team, also known as the “Redeem Team” has made their way to the semifinals of the 2008 Summer Olympics, but they will have get past the defending gold medalists, Argentina, if they want to reach the final game. This battle will take on place on Friday morning.
USA vs. Argentina – Friday, 10:15 AM
Australia talked and talked about how they were not afraid of the United States, and it was even close for the first quarter. Then the Americans outscored the Australians 64-37 over the second and third quarters to roll to a 116-85 victory, led by Kobe Bryant’s 25 points. LeBron James added 16 points, and Carmelo Anthony had 15 for the Americans, who outrebounded Australia 57-28 while shooting 56.6% from the field.
Argentina had to scrap for a 80-78 win over Greece in the quarterfinals, powered by 24 points from Manu Ginobili, while Carlos Delfino netted 23 for the Argentinians. This game was close from the opening tip, but Argentina’s NBA players rose to the occasion. Argentina also shot 14-for-32 from beyond the arc, making six more three-pointers than the Greeks.
The Americans are 19.5-point favorites in this contest, and the match-up to watch will be Bryant against Ginobili. These two are very familiar with each other from their Western Conference battles between the Los Angeles Lakers and San Antonio Spurs, and Bryant will probably focus on stopping Ginobili, since the rest of the Americans can score. However, this will be the biggest test to date for the Americans, and they will win, but they will not cover the spread.

Olympic Betting Preview – American women search for gold on the pitch against Brazil
August 20, 2008
Can the USA take the Gold against a Hot Brazil Team?
The United States womens’ soccer team is currently ranked first by FIFA, the world’s leading governing body, and they have proved their worth by making it to the gold-medal game of the 2008 Summer Olympic Games in Beijing. However, they come in as the underdog as they will face the fourth-ranked Brazilians, who have rolled through the competition. This is a rematch of the final in the 2004 Games in Athens, when the Americans edged Brazil 2-1 in extra time, thanks to Ally Wambach’s 117th minute goal.
The Americans romped to a 4-2 win over Japan in the semifinals, with goals coming from Heather O’Reilly, Lori Chalupny and a pair from Angela Hucles. Team USA outshot the Japanese 17-9, but fell behind after 16 minutes, which seemed to spark the Americans.
Brazil thoroughly dominated Germany in the other semifinal match, cruising to a 4-1 victory. The Germans stayed with the Brazilians for the second half, but Brazil scored twice in the first eight minutes of the second half, and it was essentially over from there. Cristiane netted a pair, while back-to-back World Player of the Year Marta and Formiga added solo markers for Brazil.
The Brazilians are +110 favorites in this contest, while the Americans come in at +210, and a draw is rated at +215. Brazil has been the most impressive team of the tournament thus far, and Marta has been at the heart of most of their positive moves, so the Americans would do well to make sure she is covered. With Wambach out, the Americans have been playing more of a team game, and Hucles has stepped into the role of scorer quite nicely. However, the Brazilians have revenge as an incentive on their side, and they will not be denied. Take Brazil to snag their first gold medal in this event at the Olympics with a win over the United States on Thursday.

Olympics Betting Preview – Bolt, “Redeem Team” stars of Wednesday action in Beijing
August 19, 2008
Can Andrew Bogut Lead Australia to and Upset of the “Redeem Team”?
Wednesday is shaping up to be an exciting day at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, as Jamaica’s Usain Bolt is looking to continue his track dominance in the 200m, while the USA mens’ basketball team will take on Australia in the quarterfinal.
Bolt will compete in the 200m final at 10:20 AM ET, and it looks like he will replicate his record-breaking performance in the 100m. In the qualifiers, Bolt coasted to an easy win by running hard for only half the race. He has phenomenal breakaway speed, and the scary part is that he is only 21 and may not even been near his best. Also, the 200m was Bolt’s specialty after he begged his coaches to let him try the 100m, and that turned out pretty well.
The United States mens’ basketball team will take on Australia after rolling through the preliminary rounds, and they come in as massive 31-point favorites. The Americans have been firing on all cylinders so far, and the resurgence of a healthy Dwayne Wade has a lot to do with that. Wade’s explosiveness is just one more weapon in the USA’s loaded arsenal. The Australians have the Milwaukee Bucks’ Andrew Bogut and Patrick Mills, a star guard with St. Mary’s, but the Americans are far too deep and talented to lose this one. The only thing that can stop the “Redeem Team” in Beijing is itself and a lack of focus.

Olympic Soccer Preview – South American giants square off in Beijing
August 18, 2008
Brazil and Argentina the Matchup of the Olympic Games
The match-up that everyone has been waiting for in the mens’ soccer draw of the 2008 Summer Olympics will take place on Tuesday morning, when two of the world’s most decorated soccer nations go head-to-head in the semifinals. Between them, Brazil and Argentina have seven World Cups, but only one gold medal.
Brazil vs. Argentina – 9:00 AM ET
The Brazilians needed overtime to break down a pesky Cameroon side that eliminated them in 2000 on their way to a gold medal, as goals from Rafael Sobis and Marcelo in the first half of extra time gave Brazil a tough 2-0 win. It was a very chippy affair, as Brazil were given five of the 13 yellow cards handed out during the match. The Brazilians still have yet to allow a goal during the competition, scoring 11 along the way.
Argentina were also taken to extra time by the Netherlands in a very entertaining bout, but Angel di Maria’s goal in the 105th minute was the match-winner as the Argentinians came away with a 2-1 victory. Lionel Messi scored his second goal of the competition for Argentina, who are still unbeaten throughout the tournament.
The Argentinians are favored at +135 in this contest, and they were be eager to avenge a 3-0 loss to Brazil in the final of the Copa America tournament last year. Everyone knows Ronaldinho will be the main target for the Brazil offense, and Messi will be the point man for Argentina, but the supporting cast will make the difference. Javier Mascherano has the skill to keep an eye on Ronaldinho, while Juan Roman Riquelme is the real playmaker for Argentina from his attacking midfield position. Take Argentina to take another step towards repeating as Olympic gold medalists with a victory over their South American compatriots on Tuesday.

Olympics Betting Preview – World’s fastest men line up in 100m
August 15, 2008
Can Jamaica Usain Bolt hold off Fellow Countryman Asafa Powell in the 100 Meters?
The showpiece of the Olympics’ track and field schedule is usually the 100m sprint, and the 2008 edition in Beijing should not lack for excitement. The mens’ final goes on Saturday morning at 10:30 AM, and it appears as though the podium will consist of a pair of Jamaicans, joined by an American.
Jamaica’s Usain Bolt the current world-record holder in the 100m, and he cruised through the heats with a time of 9.92, which was the fastest of the qualifiers. Bolt did not even run his hardest, and he still came relatively close to his record time of 9.72. Bolt was a 200m specialist not too long ago, and it appears as though he is ready to claim gold in the 100m event.
Fellow countryman Asafa Powell the record before Bolt beat him, but he looks in good shape and could be ready to reclaim the crown from his younger teammate. Powell held the record for almost three years, and he is very confident in his abilities, but four years of age different between he and Bolt may be too much to overcome.
American Tyson Gay says that he is fully recovered from a hamstring injury suffered in the Trials back in June, as he finished second in the quarterfinal heat. Gay’s personal best is a wind-aided 9.68, and 9.77 without the wind, but he will have to be better than 100% to beat the favored Bolt.

Olympics Betting Preview – Phelps gearing up for stretch run at eight golds
August 14, 2008
American swimmer Michael Phelps, at only age 23, has already become the most decorated Olympian in the history of the Games, as he powered the 4×200 freestyle relay team to another world record on Tuesday night, just shortly after he rolled to the gold in the 200m butterfly for yet another world record. From Thursday to Sunday, Phelps will aim complete his quest in Beijing.
Thursday night is the 200m individual relay, and Phelps owns the world record in that event, set in the Olympic trials in Omaha, Nebraska back on July 4th. After shattering the record in the 400m, you would think that the 200m would be a piece of cake for Phelps.
Next is the 4×100 medley relay heats on Friday morning, and this is one of the few events in which Phelps and his American teammates do not own the world record in. However, they are still big favorites to win the final on Sunday, as they have betting odds of -1000 over their closest competitors, Australia at +1000.
Finally, Phelps will compete in the 100m butterfly event on Friday night, and in a surprise, he does not own the world record in this event, either. He held it at one point, setting it back in 2003. Phelps only finished second in the qualifiers on Thursday, but you could tell he was not going at full throttle. By the end of the weekend, Michael Phelps should become a name for the Olympic ages, which he probably is already.

Olympic Betting Preview – Americans look to avenge Greek loss
August 13, 2008
Dwayne Wade, Carmelo Anthony, and Lebron James lead the US Olympic Team
The United States mens’ basketball team were upset by Greece in the semifinals of the 2006 World Championship, and that loss has left a bad taste in American mouths ever since. The USA will get a chance at revenge when they meet the Greeks on Thursday morning.
United States (2-0) vs. Greece (1-1) – 8:00 AM
The Americans cruised to a 97-76 romp over Angola in their last game, as Dwayne Wade led a balanced attack with 19 points, while Dwight Howard powered his way to 14 points. Team USA shot 55.8% from the field against Angola, but they were only 5-for-21 from beyond the arc. If they can start stroking the ball from long range, it is doubtful if anyone can stop the athletic Americans. Another worry is concentration: the Americans were outscored by Angola in the final period, and the US needs to prove it can maintain a high level of play throughout the entire game.
The Greeks harassed Germany on both ends of the floor during their 87-64 win, led by 23 points from Vasileios Spanoulis. The Greece game is centered on tenacity, especially on defense, and it showed as the Germans shot only 35.8% from the floor, and former NBA MVP Dirk Nowitzki was held to 13 points on 3-for-8 shooting. The Greeks are also technically sound, and they play an all-around team game
The Americans have had this game circled since 2006, and the core of Wade, Lebron James and Carmelo Anthony are anxious to show they can deal with the Greeks’ pick-and-roll game that destroyed them two years ago. A motivated American team is a dangerous one, so expect a small measure of revenge for the United States on Thursday.

Olympics Preview Wednesday – Germans take aim at unbeaten Spanish
August 12, 2008
Can Pau Gasol keep Spain Undefeated against Dirk Nowitzki and the German squad?
Wednesday’s marquee match-up in mens’ basketball comes at 9:00 PM ET, when the unbeaten Spain (2-0) team will take on a tough and gritty German squad.
The Spanish needed to go to overtime to dispose of the pesky host team, China, in an 85-75 victory on Tuesday morning. Pau Gasol was a monster for the Spanish with a game-high 29 points to go with eight rebounds, and he was also instrumental in the defense that held Chinese star Yao Ming to 11 points on 4-of-12 shooting. Rodolfo Fernandez had a great all-around game with 21 points, eight boards and six assists for the Spanish team.
A midgame slump is what killed the Germans in an 87-64 loss to Greece, as they were outscored 48-25 over the second and third quarters. Former NBA MVP Dirk Nowitzki led the way with only 13 points on 3-for-8 shooting, while Chris Kaman managed only four points on 1-for-3 shooting. If the Germans are going to stand a chance against the Spanish, these two NBA players need to lead the way.
This game is going to come down to a match-up of Gasol versus Nowitzki in the post. Both are the leaders of their teams, and they are familiar with each other from their time in the NBA’s Western Conference. Whoever gets the upper hand in the personal duel is the player that will be on the winning team on Wednesday night.

Olympics Betting Preview - Phelps goes for three in 200m in busy Tuesday/Wednesday
August 11, 2008
The US 4 X 100 Meter Relay Team after Winning Olympic Gold in the 2008 Olympics
American swimmer Michael Phelps is 2-for-2 so far in his hunt to win eight gold medals in the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, and the next leg of his mission will come in a grueling three-event-in-two-days span, when he opens with the 200m freestyle event, followed by the 4×200m freestyle relay, and concludes with the 200m butterfly.
Phelps is far and away the favorite in the 200m freestyle, as he owns the current world record in this event with a time of 1:43:86, which he set in Australia last year. After warming up with a world-record swim to snatch the gold in the 100m freestyle, another record in the 200m is almost expected from this phenom.
Phelps is also a member of the 4×200 freestyle relay team that also set a world record with a time of 7:03:24 last year in Australia, one of an amazing five world records Phelps set during the World Championships in Melbourne. Phelps and the Americans are favored at -200 to take gold in this event.
Finally, Phelps will end a busy time of the Olympics for him with the 200m butterfly, and not surprisingly, this is another event in which the 23-year-old holds the world record. Phelps’ time of 1:52:09 in Melbourne last year is the benchmark in this event, and it would surprise no one if he set the bar even higher for future swimmers, or even himself.
