The Bears and Saints will both be looking to improve their playoff outlook on Thursday when they meet in New Orleans. Here’s your Daily Sports Roundup.
The Gridiron Spotlight
The Bears enter the week a single game behind the Vikings in the NFC North division standings with a 7-6 record (6-6-1 against-the-spread). Chicago took a 20-3 lead into halftime against the Jaguars last week and cruised from there to a 23-10 victory. Kyle Orton went 20-of-34 for 219 yards passing that day with a pair of touchdown strikes and an INT, while Matt Forte ran for 69 yards on 21 carries.
The Saints find themselves in last place in the NFC South division right now despite a 7-6 mark (and a lucrative 9-4 record ATS). New Orleans kept themselves in the conference’s Wild Card picture with a 29-25 win over the Falcons last week. Drew Brees threw for 230 yards and two TDs in that victory, while Pierre Thomas rushed for the game-winning score during the fourth quarter.
Oddsmakers have Chicago set as a 3-point home favorite for Thursday night, with the game’s total at 45 points. The Bears are 5-8 on the OVER/UNDER so far this season, while the Saints are sitting at 8-5 OU through their first 13 contests.

The Blazers were edged 109-108 at home by the Magic in their last contest, despite getting 30 points from Brandon Roy and 25 points and 13 boards from LaMarcus Aldridge. The Gonzaga Bulldogs hit the floor in college hoops action on Wednesday night, with full NBA and NHL slates. Here’s all the action in your Daily Sports Roundup.
The Gridiron Spotlight
Three teams have clinched playoff spots heading into Week 15 of the NFL season - the Tennessee Titans, the New York Giants, and the Arizona Cardinals. And two of those clubs - the Giants and the Titans - sit atop the current Vegas Super Bowl odds list. New York is still the 2/1 favorite to win the title again this season, with Tennessee right behind them on the list at 4/1 odds.
And the Cardinals? They’re farther back at 28/1 odds to win this year’s Super Bowl, which puts them 11th in the pecking order. Arizona clinched the weak NFC West division with their 34-10 win over the St. Louis Rams on Sunday afternoon.
Other Notable Events
A 6-0 start to the season has Gonzaga up to No. 4 in the rankings, and they’ll be looking for their seventh consecutive win on Wednesday night when they play on the road against Washington State. The Bulldogs (4-1 ATS) cruised past Indiana for a 70-54 win on Saturday, with Josh Heytvelt scoring a team-high 17 points. The Cougars (6-2 SU, 2-4 ATS) are coming off a 58-52 loss to Baylor last game.
Just two other ranked college hoops teams are set to take the floor on Wednesday night, with Ohio at No. 10 Xavier, and Maine visiting No. 5 Oklahoma.
The Rest of the Schedule
The anemic Oklahoma City Thunder will be looking to avoid their fifth straight loss on Wednesday night when they play host to the Memphis Grizzlies. Oklahoma City is 2-20 straight-up on the season but at least they’ve been able to make a little money for their supporters, as they have a 12-10 mark against-the-spread. Memphis is 6-15 SU and 8-13 ATS through 21 games so far this season.
There are eight other games on the NBA’s schedule for Wednesday night, including LeBron James and his red-hot Cleveland Cavaliers on the road against the Philadelphia 76ers. As well, it’s Indiana at Toronto, New York at New Jersey, Charlotte at New Orleans, Atlanta at San Antonio, and Minnesota at Denver, while Golden State hosts Milwaukee, and the Lakers get a visit from Phoenix.
It’s fairly busy around the NHL as well on Wednesday, with eight games on the schedule. Oklahoma and Florida were the top two teams in the BCS rankings when the dust settled over the weekend, so they’ll square off for the national title at Dolphin Stadium on January 8. The early line saw the Gators favored by 3 points over the Sooners in that matchup, and the oddsmakers had the total at a high 72 points.
The other four BCS bowls: Penn State vs. USC in the Rose Bowl, Virginia Tech vs. Cincinnati in the Orange Bowl, Utah vs. Alabama in the Sugar Bowl, and Ohio State vs. Texas in the Fiesta Bowl. The biggest games on the NBA hardwood take place in Texas on Tuesday night, with San Antonio at Dallas, and Atlanta at Houston. The Spurs/Mavericks contest matches up a pair of teams with 11-8 records on the season (San Antonio is 10-9 against-the-spread, while Dallas is 9-10 ATS). As well, both teams have been on a roll lately, as the Spurs have won two straight and seven of 10, while the Mavs are winners of four in a row and they’ve grabbed the victory in nine of the last 10.
The Rockets, though, are ahead of both of their fellow Lone Star State clubs in the Southwest Division standings, and they’ll be trying to keep it that way with a win over the Hawks on Tuesday night. Atlanta is coming off a 100-98 road loss to Dallas on Saturday night, with Joe Johnson scoring 32 points in a losing cause. That dropped Atlanta to 12-7 straight-up so far on the year, but they’re 10-9 ATS.
The Rest of the Schedule
There are seven more games on the NBA’s schedule for Tuesday, including the Cavaliers playing host to the Raptors. The rest of the slate: Detroit at Washington, Utah at Minnesota, New York at Chicago, Milwaukee at Phoenix, Orlando at Portland, and then the Lakers at Sacramento to round out the night.
The NHL offers up just four games on Tuesday, most notably the all-Canadian matchup of Calgary at Montreal. The Islanders are also in Philadelphia on Tuesday night, while Vancouver takes the ice in Nashville, and Los Angeles plays in Colorado.

The SEC and Big 12 championship games are the highlight of the Saturday sports schedule this weekend. Here’s a look at it all in your Daily Sports Roundup.
The Gridiron Spotlight
The top-ranked Alabama Crimson Tide are unbeaten this season? That doesn’t seem to mean a whole lot to oddsmakers and bettors this weekend, as the No. 2 Florida Gators are pegged as the 10-point favorites to win the SEC championship at the Georgia Dome on Saturday afternoon (with the total at 52). Both teams have been lucrative wagers this year; Alabama is 9-3 ATS, while Florida is at 9-2.
Two ranked teams are involved in the Big 12 championship at Arrowhead Stadium on Saturday as well, but the No. 19 Missouri Tigers don’t have a shot at the national title. No. 4 Oklahoma does, though, and the 17-point favorites will be looking to punch their ticket to the BCS Championship Game with a resounding victory. The Sooners are 9-2 ATS so far this season, while the Tigers are just 5-6.
There are two other title games on Saturday, with East Carolina vs. Tulsa in the Conference USA championship, and No. 18 Boston College vs. Virginia Tech in the ACC championship. Tulsa is sitting as a 12-point favorite, while the Eagles/Hokies matchup is a pick’em as the teams battle to secure a BCS berth.
Elsewhere, No. 5 USC can clinch the Pac-10 title with a win over UCLA on Saturday; the Trojans are huge 32.5-point favorites in that one. As well, it’s Navy (-10.5) vs. Army, Pittsburgh vs. Connecticut (-2.5), South Florida vs. West Virginia (-7), Washington vs. California (-35.5), Arizona State vs. Arizona (-10.5), Arkansas State vs. Troy (-11.5), and Western Kentucky vs. Florida International (-8). Also, Cincinnati will travel out to Hawaii to play the Warriors as 7-point faves.
Other Notable Events
Chicago Blackhawks young guns Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews will try to guide their emerging team to a road win over the defending-champion Detroit Red Wings on Saturday night. The Hawks doubled up on the Anaheim Ducks 4-2 last time out, with Toews picking up two points and Kane adding a single assist.
A typically-busy Saturday around the NHL also includes a 2:00pm ET game between the Penguins and Senators in Ottawa. Also on the ice on Saturday: Philadelphia at Carolina, Boston at Florida, New Jersey at Montreal, Atlanta at the Islanders, Washington at Toronto, Buffalo at Tampa Bay, Minnesota at Nashville, and Phoenix at St. Louis. The west-coast contests for the day feature Edmonton playing in San Jose, and Los Angeles getting a visit from Columbus.
The Rest of the Schedule
Pro hoops has 10 games on their schedule for Saturday, including LeBron James and his Cavaliers on the road against the Bobcats. Other Eastern Conference battles include New Jersey at Philadelphia and Washington at Chicago, while Atlanta will pay a visit to Dallas. Rounding out the night’s schedule: Oklahoma City at Miami, the Clippers at Minnesota, Memphis at New Orleans, Golden State at San Antonio, Utah at Phoenix, and Denver at Sacramento in the late matchup.
College hoops has five Top-10 teams in action on Saturday, including a pair of games at Indianapolis’ Lucas Oil Stadium: No. 5 Gonzaga at Indiana, and Ohio State at No. 7 Notre Dame. College football offers up the MAC Championship at Ford Field on Friday night, while the NBA provides a full slate. Here’s a look in your Daily Sports Roundup.
The Gridiron Spotlight
No one has been able to beat the Ball State Cardinals (12-0 straight-up, 9-2 against-the-spread) so far this season, but the Buffalo Bulls will give it a shot in the Mid-American Conference’s championship game on Friday night (8pm ET).
The No. 12 Cardinals capped off their perfect regular season with a 45-22 win over Western Michigan on November 25. Ball State quarterback Nate Davis completed 17-of-25 pass attempts for 273 yards on that day, with one touchdown strike. MiQuale Lewis led the way on the ground with 120 yards and three scores.
The Bulls (7-5 SU, 8-4 ATS) had their five-game winning streak snapped by Kent State last time out, falling 24-21. Buffalo actually lost four of their first six games this year before rebounding to win their half of the conference. Still, the oddsmakers have Ball State listed as a big 14.5-point favorite to get the victory.
Other Notable Events
The Lakers and Wizards have combined for 18 wins so far this season, but unfortunately for Washington fans 15 of those victories sit on Los Angeles’ side of the ledger. The Lakers (15-2 SU) are coming off a 114-102 road win over the Sixers in which Kobe Bryant had 32 points. The Wizards (3-13 SU) fell 98-92 to the Trail Blazers last time out despite Antawn Jamison’s 22-point performance.
There are 10 other games on the NBA’s schedule for Friday, including Portland on the road in Boston. The Blazers (14-6 SU) have won six games in a row; the Celtics (18-2 SU) have won 10 straight games. Rounding out the schedule: Oklahoma City at Orlando, New York at Atlanta, Indiana at Cleveland, Minnesota at New Jersey, the Clippers at Memphis, Philadelphia at Detroit, Golden State at Houston, Charlotte at Milwaukee, and then Toronto at Utah to finish the evening.
The Rest of the Schedule
Friday’s four-game NHL slate is highlighted by the Canucks and Wild in Minnesota. The Wild blanked the Blues 4-0 in their last outing on Wednesday night, with 22 saves from Niklas Backstrom. Elsewhere, it’ll be Colorado heading to Dallas to play the Stars, along with Calgary at St. Louis, and Edmonton at L.A.
Finally, there are no ranked college basketball teams in action on Friday night, so hoops fans will have to settle for an Arizona / Texas A&M matchup in College Station to get their fix. South Carolina will be in action against Furman, while SMU hosts Texas A&M International, and Bryant will play Iowa at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
News from the Wire
Bills quarterback Trent Edwards could be forced to give way to J.P. Losman this weekend because of his groin injury . . . Vikings DT Pat Williams and DT Kevin Williams both received four-game suspensions from the NFL, but a restraining order might keep them on the field this weekend . . . the Cowboys are hoping that star running back Marion Barber (dislocated toe) is able to play through his injury.
A Peek at the Future
Saturday’s most notable NBA game sees Utah in Phoenix, while Cleveland will travel to Charlotte, and the Hawks and Mavs will meet in Dallas . . . the Bills technically have a home game on Sunday, but in reality they’ll be playing the division-rival Dolphins in the climate-controlled confines of Toronto’s Rogers Centre. Most books have this game as a pick’em, with the total listed at 42 points.

A single college football game and plenty of hoops action are on the sports schedule Wednesday. Here’s a look at the games in your Daily Sports Roundup.
The Gridiron Spotlight
Wednesday’s lone college football game between middling Sun Belt conference teams actually has some meaning - the winner becomes bowl eligible. Both Middle Tennessee and Louisiana Lafayette are 5-6 straight-up on the season, and will be gunning to get to the .500 mark with a win in this game Wednesday.
The Blue Raiders have won three games in a row over Louisiana-Monroe, Western Kentucky, and North Texas, trouncing the Mean Green 52-13 in their last outing on November 22. The Ragin’ Cajuns are going in the other direction right now, with three consecutive losses versus UTEP, Florida Atlantic, and Troy.
Still, the oddsmakers opened Louisiana-Lafayette as a 4.5-point home favorite in this contest, with the total sitting at 57.5 points. The Ragin’ Cajuns are 7-4 against-the-spread this season and 7-4 on the OVER/UNDER. The Blue Raiders have been less lucrative at 5-6 ATS, and they’re at 4-7 versus the totals this year.
Other Notable Events
LeBron James and his Cleveland Cavaliers will be looking for their sixth straight win on Wednesday night when they play host to the New York Knicks. The Cavs (14-3 SU, 13-4 ATS) got past the Bucks 97-85 on the road in their last outing, with James scoring 32 points in the win. Zydrunas Ilgauskas picked up 23 points.
The Bucks return to action on Wednesday as well, as they get a visit from the Bulls. There are nine other games on the NBA schedule, including Memphis at Atlanta, Portland at Washington, the Lakers at Philadelphia, Minnesota at Orlando, Indiana at Boston, Phoenix at New Orleans, the Clippers at Houston, and Miami at Utah. As well, the lowly Thunder and Bobcats will meet in Charlotte.
The Rest of the Schedule
The NHL offers up five games on Wednesday night, including an Atlantic Division clash between the Penguins and the Rangers in New York. The Rangers were blanked 4-0 by the Panthers in their last outing, while the Pens are coming off a 4-1 divisional win over the Devils. Rounding out the night’s schedule: Atlanta at Ottawa, St. Louis at Minnesota, Anaheim at Chicago, and Dallas at Edmonton.
Finally, in college basketball action top-ranked North Carolina will put their unbeaten record on the line when they take on No. 13 Michigan State. The Tar Heels pounded N.C. Asheville 116-48 last time out to improve to 7-0. Those overmatched Bulldogs will take on No. 10 Tennessee on Wednesday, while No. 3 Pittsburgh has a date with Duquesne. Other notable games on tap: Auburn vs. No. 14 Xavier, Indiana vs. No. 15 Wake Forest, and Cornell vs. No. 16 Syracuse.

Monday Night Football offers up a potential dud between the Jags and Texans this week, as the teams have eight total wins. Here’s your Daily Sports Roundup.
The Gridiron Spotlight
Jacksonville and Houston have identical 4-7 records heading into their AFC South divisional battle on Monday night, effectively putting both teams out of postseason contention this year. The Jags, who are the bigger disappointment, have dropped four of their past five games, including a 30-12 loss at home to Minnesota last week. David Garrard was picked off twice for the Jags that game.
The Texans are actually coming off a win - they knocked off the Browns 16-6 last weekend, thanks to one Sage Rosenfels touchdown strike (he was also picked off twice) and three Kris Brown field goals. Houston, though, lost each of their previous three contests, and they also fell 30-27 to the Jaguars back in Week 4.
Garrard is on Jacksonville’s injury report with a sore back this week, but he went through a full practice on Friday and is listed as PROBABLE to get the start on Monday night. Rosenfels is expected to start for the Texans on Monday, but Matt Schaub (knee) is close to returning and could take over QB duties next weekend.
The oddsmakers have the Texans listed as 3-point home favorites for Monday’s game, with the total at 48 points. Houston is 5-6 ATS on the season, and 2-3 ATS at home, while Jacksonville is 3-8 ATS overall and 3-2 ATS on the road. As well, the Texans are 9-2 on the OVER/UNDER, while the Jaguars are 5-5-1. Back in Week 4 the Texans covered the listed 7-point spread in an OVER result.
Other Notable Events
The NBA begins December with just three games on the schedule: Minnesota at Charlotte, Miami at Golden State, and Orlando at Boston. The Atlantic-leading Celtics ran their conference-best record to 16-2 (9-9 ATS) on the season with an 89-84 win over the Bobcats on Saturday, while the Southeast-leading Magic moved to 13-4 (9-7-1 ATS) by thumping the Pacers 110-96 in their last contest.
The Rest of the Schedule
The NHL has five games on the schedule for Monday, including Nashville at Buffalo, Vancouver at Columbus, Colorado at Minnesota, and Toronto at Los Angeles. As well, the Red Wings will get a visit from the Ducks, with Detroit coming off a 4-1 matinee loss to the Bruins on Saturday to fall to 15-4-4 this year.
Finally, college basketball tournament action subsides this week, but a few teams of note are still playing on Monday. Kansas will take on Kent State, while Wisconsin will do battle with Virginia Tech, and Connecticut will meet Delaware State. Don’t expect betting odds to be available for the Huskies/Hornets matchup.
News from the Wire
Schaub is the only player listed as QUESTIONABLE on the Texans’ official injury report for the Monday nighter. Each of DT Travis Johnson, WR Jacoby Jones, DT Amobi Okoye, and RB Steve Slaton are PROBABLE . . . both LB Brian Iwuh and WR Troy Williamson have QUESTIONABLE status on the Jags’ injury report, while Garrard, CB Rashean Mathis, and WR Dennis Northcutt sit as PROBABLE.
A Peek at the Future

November 25, 2008
Ball State will be looking for win No. 12 on Tuesday, while the Knicks will be looking to dress 12 players versus the Cavs. Here’s your Daily Sports Roundup.
The Gridiron Spotlight
It’s Navy vs. Northern Illinois and Western Michigan vs. Ball State in college football action on Tuesday night. The Huskies (6-5 SU, 6-4 ATS) opened as 4-point favorites in their game against the Midshipmen, and they snapped a two-game losing streak last time out by beating Kent State 42-14. Navy (6-4 SU, 4-5 ATS) fell 27-21 to Notre Dame in their last game, ending a two-game win streak.
However, the bigger matchup sees 11-0 (8-2 ATS) Ball State looking to run the table by taking care of Western Michigan (9-2 SU, 5-5 ATS). The Cardinals won their 11th consecutive contest last week, getting past Central Michigan by a final score of 31-24, and they sit at No. 15 in both the AP Poll and the BCS rankings. The Broncos are on a three-game win streak; they beat Toledo 27-17 last game. The oddsmakers like Ball State in this one, as they opened as 10-point favorites.
Other Notable Events
The Knicks could have each of Al Harrington, Tim Thomas, and Cuttino Mobley in their lineup on Tuesday night when they play host to the Cavaliers. New York shed Zach Randolph and Jamal Crawford in trades last week, and the trio they picked up in return weren’t cleared to play for the team over the weekend. The short bench didn’t cost them Saturday, though, as they beat the Wizards 122-117.
Four other matchups populate the NBA’s schedule for Tuesday, including Golden State at Washington, Phoenix at Oklahoma City, and Indiana at Dallas. As well, the Lakers will look to continue their winning ways at home when the Nets come to town. New Jersey beat the Clippers 112-95 on their own floor Saturday night.
The Rest of the Schedule
There are just three games on the NHL’s schedule for Tuesday: Atlanta at Toronto, Los Angeles at Calgary, and St. Louis at Nashville. The Predators beat the Canes 5-2 on Sunday afternoon to improve to 10-9-1 on the season. Defenseman Shea Weber led the way with two goals and an assist in the victory.
Finally, college basketball’s Maui Invitational and CBE Classic tournaments continue on Tuesday, with matchups not yet set at press time (check the books for the latest lines). Along with the participants in those events, other notable teams playing Tuesday include Pittsburgh, Villanova, Davidson, and Marquette.
News from the Wire
Giants running back Brandon Jacobs (knee) sat out the team’s win over the Cardinals on Sunday despite being listed as PROBABLE on the posted injury report . . . Browns quarterback Brady Quinn was benched in the team’s loss to the Texans on Sunday, but will get the start again in Week 13 . . . Panthers quarterback Jake Delhomme came out of the week with soreness in his elbow.
A Peek at the Future

No. 4 Texas will try to strengthen their BCS outlook on Thursday night when they get a visit from Texas A&M; the Longhorns opened as 34.5-point favorites in the expected mismatch . . . the winless Lions will take on freshly-beaten Tennessee at home on Thursday. The Titans opened as 11-point faves.

The Steelers will be looking to win - and secure the payday - on Thursday night when they play host to the division-rival Bengals. Here’s a look in your Daily Sports Roundup.
The Gridiron Spotlight
Pittsburgh picked up an 11-10 victory in their Week 11 matchup against the Chargers, although a referee’s error on a Steelers scoring play at the end of the game prevented them from covering the posted spread. That puts Pittsburgh at 7-3 straight-up but just 4-6 against-the spread through 10 games. Ben Roethlisberger went 31-of-41 for 308 yards passing with no touchdowns, while Willie Parker ran for 115 yards on 25 carries.
Not be outdone the Bengals also turned in a strange result last week, as they ended up in a 13-13 tie with the Eagles. Ryan Fitzpatrick completed 29-of-44 pass attempts for 261 yards in the game for Cincinnati, with one touchdown strike, while Cedric Benson ran for just 42 yards on 23 carries. T.J. Houshmandzadeh had 12 catches for 149 yards and a score. The Bengals are now at an ugly 1-8-1 SU on the year, and they’re 4-6 ATS.
Pittsburgh and Cincinnati met back on October 19, with the Steelers rolling to a 38-10 win as a 9-point road favorite. The combined score of that contest went OVER the posted total of 36.5 points; Pittsburgh is 5-5 on the OVER/UNDER this season, while Cincinnati is 3-6-1. Last season the Steelers were 2-0 SU and ATS against the Bengals.
Other Notable Events
There are only two games on the NBA schedule for Thursday night, but they’re both marquee matchups - Detroit at Boston, and the Lakers at Phoenix. The Suns had their modest two-game winning streak snapped on Monday night as they fell 109-97 on the road versus the Jazz. Amare Stoudemire scored 30 points in that loss, and Steve Nash picked up 14 points and eight assists. The Suns are now 8-4 SU and 6-6 ATS this year.
The Rest of the Schedule
There are eight games on the ice on Thursday, including Patrick Kane and the Chicago Blackhawks playing on the road in Dallas. Rounding out the NHL’s slate for Thursday: Florida at New Jersey, Pittsburgh at Atlanta, Montreal at Ottawa, Vancouver at Minnesota, Detroit at Edmonton, Calgary at Colorado, and Washington at Los Angeles.
Thursday’s college football action sees No. 23 Miami taking on Georgia Tech. The Hurricanes have won five straight games, slipping past Virginia Tech 16-14 in their last outing; that put Miami at 7-3 SU and 5-4 ATS on the season. The Yellow Jackets fell 28-7 to North Carolina in their last game, and they’re now at 7-3 SU and 6-2 ATS. The oddsmakers have Georgia Tech listed as a 3.5-point home favorite, with a total of 40.5.
Finally, the top college basketball action on Thursday will take place at Madison Square Garden, where they’ll stage the semi-final round of the Coaches vs. Cancer tournament. The 7:00pm ET contest sees Duke taking on Southern Illinois, while UCLA and Michigan will meet up in the 9:00pm ET game. The championship is set for Friday night.
