Baseball Betting – Manny-less Dodgers move on against Phillies

by Dirty on March 21, 2014

Baseball betting odds didn’t take into a 50-game suspension for slugger Manny Ramirez into account when they made the Los Angeles Dodgers the sportsbook favorites to win the National League West. The Dodgers will be in Philadelphia for the second of a three-game set with the Phillies on Wednesday night, and the pitching matchup features a pair of veteran southpaws, one of whom can’t seem to buy a decision.

Dodgers vs Phillies odds – Wednesday, May 13, 7:05 PM ET

Randy Wolf (1-1, 2.95) allowed a single run for the second straight start, but earned his fifth consecutive no-decision as the Dodgers lost 11-9 at home to Washington. Wolf allowed a run on five hits over six innings, throwing a season-high 109 pitches, along with five strikeouts and a pair of walks. The margin of victory in four of Wolf’s last six starts is one run, so it’s up to the bullpen and offense to do their part, because the 32-year-old lefty is pitching the way he did before Tommy John surgery slowed him down in 2005. Wolf spent eight seasons with Philadelphia, making the All-Star team in 2003, and last year was his first time facing his former team. With San Diego, Wolf gave up two runs on six hits in six innings, striking out nine on his way to a no-decision as the Padres lost 3-2 in Philadelphia.

Jamie Moyer (3-2, 7.26) was rocked in a 7-5 loss in New York to the Mets, as he gave up seven runs on seven hits in just 2.1 innings. The 46-year-old has now been tagged for 12 runs and five homers in his last eight innings of work, and he has six walks to three strikeouts. Control has never been an issue with Moyer, as his control is all that gets him by because he’s not a power pitcher. Moyer has never fared well against the Dodgers in his career, and the last time he faced them was 2007, when he gave up a season-high 10 runs on 10 hits in 5.1 innings of a 10-3 loss in Los Angeles. Moyer is 3-4 in 10 career starts against the Dodgers with a 4.80 ERA.

Sportsbook odds should favor Philadelphia at home, and the Dodgers were slumping heading into Tuesday’s series opener, as they had lost three of their last four games. The Manny Ramirez saga has surely distracted the Dodgers, which means this is a good time for Moyer to get his mojo back. Wolf was popular when he played in Philadelphia, and that may cause some nerves, along with a shaky bullpen. This is a massive start for Moyer, who is looking to prove he still has it at 46. Take the Phillies’ baseball betting odds on Wednesday.
