Bet Jamaica Daily Sports Roundup: May 29

May 29, 2009

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: Kobe Bryant and the Lakers try to finish off the Nuggets, and the Bronx Bombers head to Cleveland in search of some wins.

Tipping off on the hardwood  . . .

It’s curtains for the Nuggets on Friday night if they can’t get past the Lakers in Game 6 of the Western Conference Finals. Denver trails Los Angeles 3-2 in the best-of-seven third-round series after falling 103-94 on the road in Game 5 on Wednesday night. Bryant led the Lakers with a team-high 22 points in that win, while Lamar Odom contributed 19 points and 14 boards off the bench. Carmelo Anthony had a game-high 31 points on just 9-of-23 shooting for the Nuggets in the loss. Chauncey Billups and Kenyon Martin each put up 12 points Wednesday.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

It’ll be a battle of lefthanders in Cleveland on Friday night as Cliff Lee and the Indians host Andy Pettitte and the Yankees. Lee (2-5, 3.04 ERA) has given up three or fewer earned runs in each of his last eight outings, but his team is just 2-6 in those contests. Pettitte (4-1, 4.30 ERA), has given up four or more earned runs in four of his past five outings, but the Yankees have compiled a 4-1 record.

Also on the AL schedule for Friday: Boston at Toronto, Minnesota at Tampa Bay, the White Sox at Kansas City, Seattle at the Angels, and Oakland at Texas (in a doubleheader). As well, the Tigers and Orioles will continue their series down in Baltimore, with the O’s expected to debut their top prospect, catcher Matt Wieters. Dontrelle Willis (1-1, 3.57 ERA) heads to the hill for Detroit Friday night.

Over in the National League on Friday things will get underway early with a 2:20pm ET game between the Dodgers and Cubs in Chicago. Chad Billingsley (6-2, 2.82 ERA) is expected to get the start for Los Angeles in that contest; the lefthander gave up five runs (four earned) over six innings in a loss to the Angels last time out. Chicago will send lefthander Ted Lilly (5-4, 3.77 ERA) to the mound.

Rounding out the Senior Circuit slate for Friday: Houston at Pittsburgh, Washington at Philadelphia, Florida at the Mets, Cincinnati at Milwaukee, San Diego at Colorado, Atlanta at Arizona, and St. Louis at San Francisco. The Giants will turn to Matt Cain for that west-coast matchup; the righthander is 5-1 with a solid 2.40 ERA on the season, and his team is 4-0 in his last four outings.

NBA Odds – Lakers look to take Nuggets out on Friday

May 29, 2009

Lakers odds have Kobe Bryant and his squad as an underdog in a critical Game 6 showdown at the Pepsi Center in Denver, where the Nuggets have been great all season long. However, they showed some chinks in their armor in Game 5, and the Lakers smell blood.

NBA Odds – Nuggets -4.5, Friday, May 29, 9:00 PM ET

The Nuggets lost their bite in the fourth quarter of a 103-94 loss at Staples Center, and the criticism starts at the top with George Karl. The Denver coach wanted to let his team play through an 11-0 run to start the fourth quarter, leaving Carmelo Anthony on the bench. Anthony was the only Nugget who could seem to get it going, scoring a game-high 31 points and he played well when he came on, but it was too late and the Lakers had the momentum already. Chauncey Billups and Kenyon Martin dropped 12 each for the Nuggets, who shot 38.6% from the floor and missed 17 of their 24 three-point attempts.

Kobe Bryant had scored 30 or more in four straight, and Denver played him accordingly. But while he had seven turnovers, last year’s MVP also had eight assists to go with his 22 points, and he was more than willing to play the decoy. The Lakers made it a point to get into the post after Pau Gasol and Lamar Odom wondered why they weren’t getting more touches. The two combined for 33 points, 24 boards and nine blocks as they had their way with the Nuggets’ frontcourt. If there was a negative for the Lakers, it was that they shot 3-of-16 from beyond the arc, but that is even more reason to keep feeding the big guys in the post.

Lakers odds have made Los Angeles a 4.5-point underdog on the road, but they’ve already won Game 3 at the Pepsi Center, which will give them some confidence despite a 19-point loss in Game 4. The Nuggets killed themselves in Game 5 with some poor coaching decisions, and that worked its way through the team. The Lakers should stick with the inside gameplan, especially on the road, and the bench needs to be as good as they were in Game 5 because Denver’s reserves will have the crowd backing them. Still, experience trumps all.

Baseball Odds – Dodgers kick off weekend stint in the Windy City

May 29, 2009

If this were a boxing betting matchup, Los Angeles would be the streaking heavyweight who pummels all comers, while Chicago is the slumping fighter trying to keep themselves in the championship hunt. The two will set off a four-game series at Wrigley Field on Thursday, and baseball odds will be very close, given what the Dodgers did in Chicago in last year’s playoffs.

Dodgers vs Cubs odds – Thursday, May 28, 8:05 PM ET

Randy Wolf (2-1, 3.02) racked up his seventh no-decision in 5-4 win over the Angels at home, allowing four runs on 10 hits over 6.1 innings, striking out four with no walks. Wolf is quietly putting together a solid season, ranking tenth in the National League in both ERA and WHIP, but all seven of his no-decisions have come by two runs or less. His 15 starts against the Cubs have yielded less-than-impressive results as he is 3-7 with an ERA of 4.71.

Randy Wells (0-1, 1.50) took a loss in his first decision of the year in three starts, allowing three runs on five hits over seven innings of a 3-1 loss at San Diego, along with seven strikeouts and no walks. This is the 26-year-old righthander’s first full season as a starter in the big leagues, providing he stays up, and he’s done pretty well so far, but he hasn’t been getting very much run support from a Cubs team that was supposed to be one of the most offensively-gifted teams in all of baseball.

Baseball odds will probably favor the Cubs at home, but the Dodgers have split their last 10 trips to Wrigley Field, and they destroyed Chicago in their own stadium in last year’s NLDS en route to a three-game sweep, outscoring the Cubs 17-5. Strangely, all three of Wolf’s decisions have come on the road, where he has a 2.87 ERA and is holding the opposition to a .211 batting average. Wells is still finding his feet in the majors, and he’s facing the team with the highest amount of runs scored in the National League. Unless the Cubs can find offense in a hurry, it could be a long night for their young pitcher.

Baseball odds pick: Los Angeles

Champions League Final

May 27, 2009

For the life of me I can’t decide who is going to win this afternoon. Will it be the technical mastery of Manchester United or the sheer skill of Barcelona? Either way I do strongly believe the final score will be 3-1 (2-1, 3-0 anything over 2.5 would do mind you.)

Each team has questions along the back line going into this game. While Rio Ferdinand should play, this will be his first game in a couple of weeks. Not exactly ideal when Messi, Eto’o, Henry etc are coming right at you. Barcelona will be without both corner backs in Dani Alves and Éric Abidal.

Time for me to sit back and just enjoy the show and hope no one in the crowd gets stabbed in Rome.

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: Carmelo Anthony and the Nuggets head back to Los Angeles, while the Blackhawks try to stave off elimination in Detroit.

Tipping off on the hardwood  . . .

The Nuggets and Lakers will break a 2-2 series deadlock on Wednesday night when the Western Conference Finals shifts to Los Angeles for Game 5. Denver cruised to a 120-101 home win over Los Angeles in Game 4 on Monday night, with Chauncey Billups and J.R. Smith each scoring 24 points. Anthony battled a sore ankle and finished with 15 points. Kobe Bryant led the way for the Lakers with a game-high 34 points, and Pau Gasol contributed 21 points and 10 boards.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

Roy Halladay (8-1, 2.52 ERA) will be gunning for his ninth win of the season on Wednesday afternoon when the Blue Jays close out their road series in Baltimore. The ace righthander was denied a win against the Braves last time out despite throwing seven shutout innings while giving up just five hits. The Orioles will counter Halladay with Rich Hill, who is 1-0 with a 3.18 ERA in his two outings.

The Yankees will be on the road against Texas on Wednesday, while the Twins host Boston. Also on the American League schedule: Detroit at Kansas City, Seattle at Oakland, Tampa Bay at Cleveland, and the White Sox at the Angels. Probable Los Angeles starter Jered Weaver is 3-2 with a 2.52 ERA on the season, and he held the Dodgers to a single run over five innings in his last start.

Over in the NL the Mets will go with ace Johan Santana (6-2, 1.50 ERA) in their home game against the Nationals Wednesday. Santana has picked up the win in each of his last two starts, although he did surrender nine runs (six earned) over 14 innings of work in those outings. Jordan Zimmerman will get the ball for the Nats; the righthander has given up five or more runs in four of his last five starts.

Making up the rest of the Senior Circuit’s slate for Wednesday: St. Louis at Milwaukee, Pittsburgh at the Cubs, the Dodgers at Colorado, Florida at Philadelphia, Houston at Cincinnati, Atlanta at San Francisco, and San Diego at Arizona. Padres starter Jake Peavy turned down a trade to the White Sox last week; the righthander has won two straight outings to sit at 4-5 with a 3.48 ERA.

Taking a trip around the rink . . .

The Blackhawks could find themselves bounced from the playoffs on Wednesday night as they play in Detroit in the fifth game of the Western Conference final. Chicago is down 3-1 to the Red Wings in the best-of-seven set after they were blasted 6-1 in Game 4 on Sunday. Hawks starting netminder Nikolai Khabibulin missed Game 4 with a lower-body injury, while Wings goalie Chris Osgood sat out the third period with dehydration. Detroit forward Pavel Datsyuk (foot) and defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom (lower body) both sat out Sunday and are listed as day-to-day. Oddsmakers have listed the Wings as -235 favorites for Wednesday.

Bet Jamaica Daily Sports Roundup: May 26

May 26, 2009

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Penguins try to close out the Canes, while the Cavaliers will try to avoid sinking into a deeper hole against the Magic.

Tipping off on the hardwood  . . .

The Magic can go up 3-1 on the Cavaliers in the Eastern Conference Finals on Tuesday night if they can pick up a second straight home win over LeBron James and company. Orlando got 24 points and nine rebounds from Dwight Howard on Sunday as they surged to a 99-89 win over Cleveland in Game 3. James had 41 points in the loss for the Cavaliers, but went just 11-of-28 from the field. Orlando was favored by 1.5 points Sunday, and they’re a slim favorite again for Tuesday.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

Coming off a rare non-win, Royals starter Zack Greinke will return to the mound at home on Tuesday night as his team hosts the Tigers. Greinke took a no-decision against the Indians last time out despite surrendering just two earned runs over six innings of work. The righthander is now 7-1 with an 0.82 ERA on the season, and he picked up a complete-game win over the Tigers back in April. Detroit counters Greinke with Edwin Jackson, who is 4-2 with a 2.55 ERA in 2009.

Also on tap in the American League on Tuesday: Toronto at Baltimore, Tampa Bay at Cleveland, the Yankees at Texas, Boston at Minnesota, Seattle at Oakland, and the White Sox at the Angels. Projected Los Angeles starter Joe Saunders is 6-2 with a 3.17 ERA, and he tossed seven scoreless innings vs. the Mariners last time out. Chicago’s Bartolo Colon (2-4, 4.23 ERA) is his opponent.

Making up the National League’s full slate for Tuesday: Florida at Philadelphia, Washington at the Mets, Houston at Cincinnati, Pittsburgh at the Cubs, St. Louis at Milwaukee, the Dodgers at Colorado, San Diego at Arizona, and Atlanta at San Francisco. The Giants will turn to ace Tim Lincecum for Tuesday night’s contest; the righthander is 3-1 with a 3.45 ERA this season, but he’s on a streak of three straight no-decisions. Atlanta will go with Kris Medlen (0-1, 15.00 ERA).

Taking a trip around the rink . . .

The Penguins can sweep their way into the Stanley Cup final on Tuesday night when they take on the Hurricanes in Game 4 of the Eastern Conference final in Carolina. Pittsburgh rolled over the Canes 6-2 on the road in Game 3 on Saturday night, with Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin combining for three goals and two assists. The oddsmakers like the Penguins’ chances of finishing off this series on Tuesday, as they’ve been pegged as -130 road faves (with total at 5.5).
