NCAA Football Betting – Defense is the theme on New Year’s Day

December 31, 2008

Online sports betting players who will be pouring over their offshore sportsbooks looking to make their NCAA football picks on New Year’s Day shouldn’t expect any shootouts from the later games, as all four of the participants in the Rose and Orange Bowls finished in the top 25 in defense. Orange Bowl betting has picked Cincinnati to end the best season in their history with a victory, while Rose Bowl betting has gone with USC to take its third straight win in the “Granddaddy of Them All”.
Cincinnati vs Virginia Tech odds
The Big East champion Bearcats (11-2) will be making their first appearance in a BCS bowl as 2.5-point Orange Bowl betting favorites, and they prefer to do their offensive damage in the air, coming in 25th in pass offense, while they were solid defensively as well, finishing 25th in the nation. The ACC champion Hokies (9-4) can only dream of that sort of balance, as they are seventh in defense, but an atrocious 107th in offense, including 111th in the air. These two have met only twice in their history, splitting a pair of meetings in 1995 and 2006 at Virginia Tech.
Penn State vs USC odds
The Pac-10 champion Trojans (11-1) and their No.1 defense are 8.5-point Rose Bowl betting favorites against the Big Ten champion Nittany Lions (11-1), who will be a much bigger test for USC than Illinois was last year. Penn State is superbly even, finishing fifth in defense and 14th in offense, while the Trojans weren’t bad on offense themselves, coming in just ahead of the Nittany Lions in 13th. This game will be won on desire, tackling and whoever can make the fewest mistakes. These two schools split a pair of meetings back in 1996 and 2000, both at Penn State.

NFL Playoff Betting – Cards, Falcons, Colts, Chargers kick off Saturday action

December 30, 2008

The most exciting time of the gridiron year is about get started for offshore sportsbooks and online sports betting players, as NFL playoff betting action begins on Saturday afternoon. In the AFC, Indianapolis and San Diego stage a rematch of last year’s wild-card matchup which went the way of the underdog Chargers, while Atlanta and Arizona will look to keep their dream seasons alive in the NFC.

Falcons vs Cardinals odds

The Falcons (11-5) are 2-point NFL playoff betting favorites on the road on Saturday, and their turnaround from a 4-12 mark last year is one of the feel-good stories of the year. Rookie Matt Ryan showed the poise of a ten-year veteran in the pocket, finishing a very respectable sixth in the NFC in passer rating. The Cardinals (9-7) stumbled to the NFC West title, but a late-season slide has made sportsbooks very skeptical of their NFC playoff betting chances. Both offenses are in the top six in the league, while neither defense can finish better than 19th, so sports wagering players should consider the OVER in this contest. The Falcons have won six of their last ten overall against the Cardinals.

Colts vs Chargers odds

The Colts (12-4) are 1.5-point NFL playoff betting favorites in San Diego, where they have already beaten the AFC West champion Chargers (8-8) this season. Indianapolis edged the Chargers 23-20 in Week 12 action, and they enter the postseason as the league’s hottest team with nine consecutive victories. The Chargers won four straight to claim their division (along with a Denver collapse), and the offense has put up over 37 points a game in that streak. As usual, defense will be the difference in this contest, as the Colts are a sturdy 11th, while the Chargers are a measly 25th. Overall, these two have split their last ten meetings.
