Bet Jamaica Daily Sports Roundup: August 27
August 27, 2008
Baseball dominates the sports schedule again on Wednesday, with the Yankees hosting the BoSox in one of the marquee games. Here’s your Daily Sports Roundup . . .
Event of the day . . .
The Red Sox are leading the Wild Card race in the American League (with the Rays still comfortably holding down first place in the AL East), but the Yankees will be looking to make up some ground in their quest for yet another postseason berth when they continue their three-game home series against their bitter rival on Wednesday night.
Boston is expected to send recently-acquired Paul Byrd (8-11, 4.61 ERA) to the mound for this contest. Byrd has managed to pick up the win in five of his past six outings, and oddly he’s faced the Blue Jays in each of his last three starts (going 2-1). The righthander last took on the Yankees back on May 8, giving up five runs in a defeat.
New York has Sidney Ponson (7-4, 4.67 ERA) on tap for Wednesday night’s matchup, and the righthander is coming off a brutal outing against Toronto in which he gave up seven earned runs on eight hits over just two innings of work. Ponson is just 1-3 over his past six starts, and he was pummeled by Boston for seven runs back on July 27.
Non-event of the day . . .
The Rangers have been terrible in August, and the Royals have been terrible for many, many years. Those two teams will meet on the field in Kansas City on Wednesday night in the finale of a three-game series. Matt Harrison (5-3, 6.27 ERA) will get the ball for Texas in that contest, while Brian Bannister (7-13, 5.89 ERA) will pitch for Kansas City.
Also on the schedule . . .
It’ll be Fausto Carmona (6-5, 4.40 ERA) vs. Justin Verlander (10-13, 4.42 ERA) in the Indians/Tigers game on Wednesday. Also on the AL’s slate for the day: Minnesota at Seattle, the White Sox at Baltimore, Toronto at Tampa Bay, and Oakland at the Angels.
There are two key divisional battles in the National League on Wednesday night, with the Mets at Philadelphia and Milwaukee at St. Louis. Filling out the Senior Circuit’s schedule: the Cubs at Pittsburgh, Arizona at San Diego, the Dodgers at Washington, Florida at Atlanta, Cincinnati at Houston, and Colorado at San Francisco.
News from the wire . . .
The White Sox activated third baseman Joe Crede from the disabled list on Monday . . . . the Mets have second baseman Luis Castillo back from the DL, but pitcher John Maine is now on the shelf . . . Rangers outfielder Nelson Cruz homered and drove in three runs in his return to the big leagues on Monday . . . Bengals running back Rudi Johnson, who has been dealing with a hamstring injury, is reportedly on the team’s trading block.
Peek at the future . . .
The NFL’s preseason schedule concludes on Thursday and Friday this week . . . the WNBA returns to action on Thursday night; the league was on a break during the Olympics . . . Phil Mickelson is pegged as the 6/1 Vegas favorite to get the win in the PGA Tour’s Deutsche Bank Championship, which gets underway Friday morning.
MLB Match-Up Wednesday - Phillies, Mets locked in NL East battle
August 26, 2008
New York Mets at Philadelphia Phillies- Wednesday, August 27 at 7:05 p.m. ET
Philadelphia and New York are sharing an incredibly tight race for the National League East division title. Presently, Mets odds give New York the edge to win the World Series, but Phillies odds don’t trail much further behind.
A big reason baseball odds are backing New York is Johan Santana (12-7). He’s been excellent this season, posting a 2.64 ERA and 1.14 WHIP. As usual, he’s enjoying a second-half surge, guiding the Mets to four straight wins while going 4-0 with a 2.20 ERA and 1.01 WHIP in his last eight starts.
Santana has had some rough luck in run support this season. The Mets offense is among National League leaders in run scoring, but it seems to sputter when he’s on the hill. Considering how well he’s pitching, it hasn’t really mattered lately.
The Phillies will turn to Kyle Kendrick (11-7). The right-hander is having a tough season despite his win totals, yielding a 4.87 ERA and 1.55 WHIP. That effort has resulted in two losses over his last three starts for Philadelphia.
But Kendrick’s career effort against New York is what makes MLB betting so interesting. Though he’s struggled this season, Kendrick has pitched very well against the Mets, notching a 2.16 ERA in two starts.
Over the past few years Philly’s offense has ranked among the league’s best. Overall, it’s been more of the same this season, but the lineup has truly lagged since the All-Star break. If the hitters could maintain a little more consistency, Philadelphia’s World Series futures might be a little better.
The Mets have won seven of their past 10 meetings with Philadelphia. It doesn’t appear that trend will change on Wednesday, as Santana clearly has a big edge over Kendrick. New York should earn a victory.

Bet Jamaica Daily Sports Roundup: August 26
August 26, 2008
Two veteran pitchers will take to the mound on Tuesday night when the Mets and the Phillies meet in an NL East divisional matchup. Here’s your Daily Sports Roundup . . .
Event of the day . . .
It’ll be Pedro Martinez (4-3, 4.97 ERA) vs. Jamie Moyer (11-7, 3.54 ERA) on Tuesday night as the Mets begin a short two-game road set against the division-rival Phillies.
Martinez has managed to pick up just one win so far in the month of August, going 1-1 with three no-decisions over five outings. However, the righthander held the opposition to three or fewer earned runs in four of those five August starts. Last time out, against the Braves, Martinez surrendered four earned runs on seven hits over seven innings.
Moyer is 1-1 with two no-decisions in his four August outings, but he’s also been effective - the lefthander has allowed just six earned runs over 24 2-3 innings so far this month. Moyer was stuck with a no-decision in his start against the Nationals last time out, giving up two runs (one earned) on five hits over 6 2-3 innings of work that day.
Non-event of the day . . .
The poor Rockies seem to end up in this section quite a bit. Colorado is expected to send Jorge De La Rosa (6-7, 5.86 ERA) to the mound on the road on Tuesday night when they take on San Francisco. The Giants’ probable pitcher for the contest is rookie Matt Palmer (0-1, 8.64 ERA), who was roughed up in his first start of the season against the Braves, but came back with a solid outing against the Marlins last Thursday night.
Also on the schedule . . .
The rest of the National League schedule for Tuesday night: the Cubs at Pittsburgh, the Dodgers at Washington, Florida at Atlanta, Cincinnati at Houston, Milwaukee at St. Louis, and Arizona at San Diego. Brandon Webb (19-4, 2.74 ERA) will be gunning for his 20th win of the season when the Diamondbacks take on the weakling Padres.
Over in the American League the top Tuesday matchups are in the AL East, where it’s Boston at the Yankees (Wakefield vs. Pettitte) and Toronto at Tampa Bay (Halladay vs. Shields). Other Junior Circuit contests on tap: the White Sox at Baltimore, Cleveland at Detroit, Texas at Kansas City, Oakland at the Angels, and Minnesota at Seattle.
News from the wire . . .
There is still limited information available about the injuries being nursed by both Colts quarterback Peyton Manning and Patriots quarterback Tom Brady . . . the Giants have lost lineman Osi Umenyiora for the season because of a knee injury, and now might try to lure back Michael Strahan . . . Vijay Singh won the first PGA Tour playoff tournament, beating Sergio Garcia and Kevin Sutherland in a playoff at The Barclays.
Peek at the future . . .
The second PGA Tour playoff tournament, the Deutsche Bank Championship, gets underway on Thursday morning . . . it’ll be Johan Santana (12-7, 2.64 ERA) vs. Kyle Kendrick (11-7, 4.87 ERA) in the Mets/Phillies matchup on Wednesday night . . . the college football season gets underway on Thursday night with 14 games on the schedule, including No. 23 Wake Forest hitting the road for a contest against Baylor.
MLB Match-Up Tuesday – Jays try to stay alive in Tampa Bay
August 25, 2008
The Toronto Blue Jays still have an outside shot of snatching the wild-card spot in the American League, but they lost a great chance to make up ground on Boston by dropping two of three to the Red Sox at home on the weekend. The Blue Jays will turn to their ace when they head to Tropicana Field on Tuesday to kick off a three-game series with the Tampa Bay Rays, who are starting to run away with the East crown.
Toronto Blue Jays Tampa Bay Rays – 7:10 PM ET
Roy Halladay (15-9, 2.68) finally got some run support from his offense in a 14-3 rout of the Yankees at home, but as usual “Doc” also held up his end of the bargain by allowing three runs on five hits over seven innings, striking out nine and walking two. Halladay would have at least three to four more victories if his offense were more consistent, and that puts a lot of pressure on the 2003 Cy Young winner. However, Halladay has not fared well against the Rays this season, losing all three of his starts with an ERA of 5.32.
James Shields (11-7, 3.68) went eight innings to earn the win as the Rays doubled the Angels 4-2 at home, giving up a pair of runs on nine hits, along with seven strikeouts and a single walk. If there was a negative to this outing, it is that Shields gave up a homer for the third consecutive start. But much like the rest of his young team, the 26-year-old refuses to give up and the Tampa Bay staff has been very good about letting their players play through any trouble they get into. Shields has posted a 2-1 record against the Blue Jays in three starts with an impressive ERA of 2.53.
The Rays have dominated the Blue Jays in 2008, winning ten of their 12 meetings to date. You would think that Halladay will eventually beat the Rays, but not in Tampa Bay, where the Rays have a AL-best 47 wins and Shields is 8-1 with a 2.21 ERA. Take the Rays to open this series with a win on Tuesday.

Bet Jamaica Daily Sports Roundup: August 25
August 24, 2008
The third week of the National Football League preseason schedule concludes on Monday with the Chargers hosting the Seahawks. Here’s your Daily Sports Roundup…
Event of the day . . .
Oddsmakers like the Chargers’ chances of beating the Seahawks at home on Monday night, as they’ve been set as 6.5-point favorites in the contest (with the total at 39.5 points). San Diego is 1-1 so far during the preseason (beating the Cowboys and losing to the Rams), but they managed to cover the posted spread in both those games. The Seahawks are 2-0 straight-up and 1-0-1 against-the-spread so far in exhibition play.
Seattle, though, isn’t expected to have starting quarterback Matt Hasselbeck behind center against the Chargers on Monday night. Hasselbeck hasn’t seen the field for the team so far during the preseason, and he experienced more back pain during practice sessions this past week. The team is hoping he will be back on the field for Week 1.
The Chargers have health concerns of their own, as Shawne Merriman announced he has a serious knee injury and could be forced to miss the entire season. More information on that injury should come out this week. Tight end Antonio Gates, though, is getting closer to returning from his foot injury, and should be ready for the season.
Non-event of the day . . .
Jeff Francis was 17-9 for the Rockies last season, but this year he’ll be hard-pressed to even get half that many victories. The lefthander enters Monday’s game against fellow NL West weakling San Francisco with a 3-8 record and a 5.52 ERA, and he hasn’t earned a win since June 18. The Giants will counter with Matt Cain (8-9, 3.52 ERA).
Also on the schedule . . .
There are four other games on the National League schedule for Monday: the Cubs at Pittsburgh, the Dodgers at Philadelphia, Houston at the Mets, and Arizona at San Diego. Dan Haren (14-6, 3.12 ERA) is expected to take on Jake Peavy (9-9, 2.84 ERA) in that D-Backs/Padres game; they faced each other in an August 20 Arizona win.
Over in the American League on Monday it’ll be the White Sox at Baltimore, Cleveland at Detroit, Texas at Kansas City, Oakland at the Angels, and Minnesota at Seattle. Francisco Liriano (4-3, 4.24 ERA) is scheduled to get the ball for the Twins in that last contest; the lefthander has won each of his four starts since returning from the minors.
News from the wire . . .
The Blue Jays sent starting pitcher Shaun Marcum to the minor leagues, replacing him with John Parrish . . . Yankees starting pitcher Carl Pavano made his long-awaited return against the Orioles on Saturday night, giving up three earned runs on seven hits over five innings in a win . . . Dolphins quarterback Chad Pennington solidified his hold on the team’s starting gig with a good performance against the Chiefs on Saturday.
Peek at the future . . .
Three key divisional battles will get underway on Tuesday, with the Red Sox taking on the Yankees, the Mets playing in Philadelphia, and the Cardinals getting a visit from the Brewers . . . there are 13 more NFL preseason games on Thursday, with the final three exhibition contests of the year being played on Friday . . . the second PGA Tour playoff tournament, the Deutsche Bank Championship, will get going on Thursday morning.

Olympic Betting Preview – USA, Spain clash for gold-medal glory
August 22, 2008
The USA mens’ basketball team moved one step closer to the gold medal by dispatching of the defending Olympic champions, and only a team that they have already routed stands in their way as they will face Spain early on Sunday morning.
USA vs. Spain – Sunday, August 24, 2:30 AM
The Americans made short work of 2004 champions Argentina, racing out to a 30-11 first-quarter lead before rolling to a 101-81 victory. Carmelo Anthony led the way with 21 points, while LeBron James scored 13 of his 15 points after halftime. Argentina fought gamely, especially after team leader Manu Ginobili left the game with an ankle injury in the first quarter, but the Americans just had too much athleticism and team speed for the Argentinians to overcome.
Spain held on for a 91-86 win over Lithuania to reach the gold-medal game for the first time since Los Angeles in 1984, with Pau Gasol netting 19 points. The Spaniards could not pull away from their opponents after a quick start, but their experience in winning the World Championships in 2006 definitely came through for them.
These two teams met in the preliminary round, and it was not even close as the Americans romped to a 119-82 win. As with most of their games, the first quarter was close, but then Team USA kicked their game into another gear and just ran away from Spain. Undoubtedly, Spain will have some confidence from their semifinal win, but the Americans are far too deep and on top of that, they are completely focused on winning the gold. Take Team USA to reclaim their place as the world’s greatest basketball nation with a win on Sunday.

NASCAR Betting: Sharpie 500 Preview
August 22, 2008
- Carl Edwards will be looking to pick up a second straight victory on Saturday night when the Sprint Cup Series hits Bristol Motor Speedway for this year’s Sharpie 500.
Edwards beat Kyle Busch in the 3M Performance 400 at Michigan International Speedway last weekend to move a bit closer to the points leader in the standings. Edwards now has five wins on the year, while Busch leads the series with eight.
David Ragan, Greg Biffle, and Matt Kenseth rounded out the Top 5 at Michigan, while Mark Martin, Brian Vickers, Kevin Harvick, Elliott Sadler, and Jamie McMurray made up the rest of the Top 10.
Jeff Burton settled for 11th at Michigan, while Tony Stewart was 12th, Martin Truex Jr. was 16th, Jimmie Johnson was 17th, Clint Bowyer was 20th, Ryan Newman was 21st, and Dale Earnhardt Jr. was 23rd. Denny Hamlin (39th), Kasey Kahne (40th), and Jeff Gordon (42nd) all ran into trouble and finished near the back of the pack.
Busch’s lead on Edwards is now down to 222 points with just three races to go before the Chase begins. Johnson, Earnhardt Jr., and Burton still hold down the rest of the standings’ Top 5, while Stewart, Biffle, Harvick, Gordon, Kenseth, Kahne, and Hamlin are the other drivers currently above the Chase cutoff line.
Bowyer and Ragan are tied for 13th place in the standings, 26 points behind Hamlin, so they’ll both be looking for big results at Bristol on Saturday night. None of those three drivers, however, has won a Cup event at Bristol in their career.
Edwards won the Sharpie 500 last year, while Burton won the Food City 500 on that track back in March of this season. Gordon and Kurt Busch each have five career Cup victories at Bristol, while Martin and Kenseth have two apiece. Kyle Busch, Harvick, Earnhardt Jr., Stewart, and Sadler have each won there once.
After racing at Bristol the drivers of the Sprint Cup Series will hit Auto Club Speedway for the Pepsi 500 on August 31. The pre-Chase schedule then concludes on September 6 with the Chevy Rock & Roll 400 at Richmond International Raceway.
Bet Jamaica Daily Sports Roundup: August 22
August 22, 2008
The New England Patriots will be back in preseason action on Friday night, as they play host to the Philadelphia Eagles at Gillette Stadium. Here’s your Daily Sports Roundup…
Event of the day . . .
Here we go again with all the Tom Brady injury intrigue. The Patriots’ quarterback reportedly has a foot, ankle, or leg injury that either needs rest or is of no concern at all. Don’t expect any more details than those from the secretive New England front office, who always seem to manage to drum up a reason to put Brady on the injury report.
And don’t expect much dedication to winning from the Patriots when they get a visit from the Eagles at Gillette Stadium on Friday night. New England, a team that does everything to win during the regular season, is already 0-2 so far during exhibition action. Philadelphia is 1-1 so far in the preseason, losing to the Steelers in their opener and then knocking off the Panthers last week.
Still, the oddsmakers opened the Patriots as 4-point home favorites for this contest (that line has since slipped a couple points, thanks to Brady’s injury ‘news’), with the total hovering around 37.5 points. Kickoff for the contest is set for 7:30pm ET.
Non-event of the day . . .
Colorado would need to go on quite a hot streak to even get a whiff of playoff contention over the next month, and the Rockies will be up against another NL also-ran on Friday night, the Reds. Cincinnati has already dealt both Ken Griffey Jr. and Adam Dunn this season, and their best possible result for 2008 is probably fifth place in the NL Central.
Also on the schedule . . .
There are three other National Football League games on tap for Friday: Tennessee at Atlanta, Houston at Dallas, and Green Bay at Denver. Each of the home teams has been hovering around a 3-point favorite (as usual) in those three exhibition contests.
In American League action, Mike Mussina (16-7, 3.35 ERA) will return to his old stomping grounds on Friday night when his Yankees play in Baltimore. Other AL games on Friday include Boston at Toronto, Cleveland at Texas, Detroit at Kansas City, Tampa Bay at the White Sox, Minnesota at the Angels, and also Oakland at Seattle.
Over in the National League there’s a big pitcher’s duel on tap for Friday, with Houston’s Roy Oswalt (11-8, 4.28 ERA) taking on New York’s Johan Santana (11-7, 2.75 ERA). In other action around the NL on Friday it’s Washington at the Cubs, the Dodgers at Philadelphia, Pittsburgh at Milwaukee, Atlanta at St. Louis, Florida at Arizona, and finally San Diego at San Francisco.
As well, there is one Canadian Football League game on the schedule for Friday night, as Calgary travels to British Columbia. The Lions were opened as 2.5-point home favorites in that contest, while the game’s total has been pegged at 58 points.
News from the wire . . .
The Patriots could give running back LaMont Jordan more work on Friday night, as he didn’t have a carry in the team’s second exhibition contest against the Bucs last week . . . Mets outfielder Ryan Church might be able to return to the lineup next week, as he’s been feeling no ill effects from his concussion in minor league rehab games . . . the Sixers have officially announced guard Andre Iguodala’s six-year, $80 million deal.
Peek at the future . . .
The drivers of the Sprint Cup Series will compete in the Sharpie 500 at Bristol Motor Speedway under the lights on Saturday night . . . the drivers of Formula One will return to the track on Sunday as they take part in the European Grand Prix in Spain . . . the bronze medal game at the Olympic men’s basketball tournament will be played at 12:00am ET on Sunday, with the gold medal contest getting underway at 2:30am ET.
Olympics Betting Preview – USA takes on defending champions from Argentina
August 21, 2008
Can Manu Ginobli Lead Argentina to an Upset of the “Redeem Team”?
The USA mens’ basketball team, also known as the “Redeem Team” has made their way to the semifinals of the 2008 Summer Olympics, but they will have get past the defending gold medalists, Argentina, if they want to reach the final game. This battle will take on place on Friday morning.
USA vs. Argentina – Friday, 10:15 AM
Australia talked and talked about how they were not afraid of the United States, and it was even close for the first quarter. Then the Americans outscored the Australians 64-37 over the second and third quarters to roll to a 116-85 victory, led by Kobe Bryant’s 25 points. LeBron James added 16 points, and Carmelo Anthony had 15 for the Americans, who outrebounded Australia 57-28 while shooting 56.6% from the field.
Argentina had to scrap for a 80-78 win over Greece in the quarterfinals, powered by 24 points from Manu Ginobili, while Carlos Delfino netted 23 for the Argentinians. This game was close from the opening tip, but Argentina’s NBA players rose to the occasion. Argentina also shot 14-for-32 from beyond the arc, making six more three-pointers than the Greeks.
The Americans are 19.5-point favorites in this contest, and the match-up to watch will be Bryant against Ginobili. These two are very familiar with each other from their Western Conference battles between the Los Angeles Lakers and San Antonio Spurs, and Bryant will probably focus on stopping Ginobili, since the rest of the Americans can score. However, this will be the biggest test to date for the Americans, and they will win, but they will not cover the spread.
